Yep.
This is how I look at team building.
The goal is to win the Stanley Cup, that is it.
Owners will make money, if you win the Cup.
Fans will be happy, if you win the Cup.
Most issues around a franchise will be positively resolved, if you win the Cup.

Let's say, it takes 7-9 years from Entry Draft to Cup contender. Player is 18 yr old to 25 - 27ish.
5 years in the Cup compete window, player is now 30 - 32ish. if you didn't win a Cup during this phase and the player isn't generational (Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, etc) they are dealt for picks and young prospects. Sorry, time to rebuild. If they are generational, give them a bit longer till say 34, but repeat the sell for picks and prospects process.
You must have
1) Draft and develop window,
2) Team building window,
3) Cup compete window,
4) Sell, draft and rebuild window.
Team cycle of life...
The Canucks, NEVER DO THIS!
You need to suck bad to get the picks to be good, and you need to sell assets to get those picks. This middling team crap of "rebuild on the fly" and "stay competitive to just make the dance" only hurts your actual odds of winning the Cup, and find great and possible generational talents to make it happen.
But hey, 52 years of not doing this have worked out so well why change...

Not arguing with the process but it's just not a cut and dry, otherwise every team would do it and be successful at it.

Yeah look at Tampa and Colorado tons of shit contracts.
- A_SteamingLombardi

Exactly, difference is they went through a 5 year rebuild, not a 8 plus year re-tool. You can't make this sh*t up!

At least try it for a couple of cycles. Wouldn't it be nice for once, as long time Canuck fans, to have 14 picks in a draft? Worst case scenario for us is lot of prospects to develop or trade.

That's gross, but keep it going

Look at Detroit now, getting ready to compete and still have 10 picks. Stevie Y

Canucks had a top 5 prospects pool 3-5 years ago. I don't know why they haven't won a cup yet.

It's still easier to trade all our picks.

16 teams make the playoffs.

16 teams don’t make the playoffs.

Did the Canucks make the playoffs?

I guess technically they’re bottom 16 not bottom 20.

Math

Whatever, twist poop anyway you want, they are not 26OA.

The team had a really good response to Boudreau, no need to exaggerate or create hysteria where none exist.

Exactly. Canucks had a 4 year window where they were one of the best teams and could have won. Fell a game short. Not every team that build succeeds to their potential.

Mismanagement of some of those assets,
Missing out on a couple top 10 picks,
Self imposed cap hell,
Some poor trades,
Not enough draft picks,
This is not just a Benning thing, it can and does happen to other teams. But you have to admit when the system and organization you have built has not performed as planned. Admit this cycle failed and start the new cycle from the ashes of this one.

You asked where “bottom 20” came from. I thought this was very clear and not hysterical at all.

Benning ran this team like a cup contender for almost a decade, without ever having any success.

Rueby is pointing out that the team is, again, perched to be one of the top 5 spending teams in the league. Does their potential for success warrant that?

I guess we’ll see.

You get an award because you are the most delusional poster. This way when your hero is bought out you will have a trophy to boost your spirits. Yes, there is a better chance that he is bought out than Boeser scoring 35. What a ludicrous opinion. Dude can’t exit or enter the zone with control. Can’t forecheck. He can circle the soft spots around the net and wait for Miller to retrieve the puck. Dime a dozen player than can be had for half the cap hit in free agency

It's Aquilini's way of showing he's trying to win, someone should tell him you can still try to win without spending to the cap.

I don't remember saying this cycle worked. I've never even said everything had gone perfectly. I just dont share the deep depression that some run straight too every year about everything.

Rugby was exaggerating a bottom 20 to fit his gloom narrative, I do not share that view.
Benning is not running things.

The team with the coaching and management change played as a top 5 in spending, so maybe it does warrant that.

I guess we will see.

Why does there need to be a flare for dramatics, team is drafting 15th, had an incredible run under the change. But this group is demanding change because of Benning whom is no longer here, let it go everyone.

It's also 2 weeks from free agency. Van has signed their rfa and needs only 2 players to fill out the roster. I doubt many teams can say that.

doom and gloom donny will be alright. Once he has his latte with a sprinkle of metamucil, he will be just fine.
