Well no.

They paid below market value (or looking back at what Sam and Buch got, almost seems right inline tbh) for a very good winger.

- SDSabre

again, what they paid for him, they would get close to that shipping him out as a rental in 20 months

this is not Raffi Torres going to the sens, it's a top 10 winger in the NHL at a young age

if and when you get DeBrincat, you then worry about the skinner contract 2 years from now when you are up against the cap

we have a 2 year window to spend, spend, spend

and we go after matt murray

- homiedclown

We didn't go after Murray. We were willing to spend to get a better asset - that is very encouraging.

See what happened to Ottawa today. They have a terrible contract that they can't move because the player won't go. Why take that chance?

And again, the season doesn't start for several months.

not sure why people are pissed, the Sabres aren't paying the CAT 9mill or more a year. The money will go to our players before FA.
- SABRES 89

Well hopefully those players are worth saving that money for.

I'm not referring to the linemates, im referring to usage. He's seen a ton of minutes, like way more than most forwards with his development path. Additionally, it appears they asked him to take on way more defensive responsibility than he should've playing on a line with Debrincat and Kane, who presumably took care of the offense.

That's particularly taxing on a young player, especially since Kane is particularly bad defensively. It's a lot to take on the lions share of that role and produce at that level. Cozens had a similar problem. It's just overwhelming at that age.

Dach's possession and shot quality numbers away from kane are very good.

KA is in the first full off-season of a rebuild getting rid of Eichel, Risto and Sam. It’s not his fault Botts and Murray were incompetent and failed miserably at a rebuild the first time. He has a plan and seems to be sticking to it, unlike the other two who had no direction on what they were doing.

Beane and McDermott didn’t rush a rebuild just because the Bills previous GMs sucked too. We trusted the process for them and look at us now, Vegas super bowl favorites.

Hockey takes a little more time. Could be eating my words tonight if he bungles his picks but I have loved what he has been doing over the last few years.

Those of you that are upset and want to rush, you can have your opinion, but it is wrong

- Fattony1187

Hockey does not take more time, it's literally the easiest sport statistically out of all major 4 sports to make the playoffs.... 50% of each conference makes it every year... Big difference between us and the Bills.

I get what you are saying. I'm just saying it's actually market price looking back at the best 2 wings moved prior. So to say they got him for next to nothing isn't accurate. Nothing more, nothing less. Just in line. Wingers don't get the love.

Fair enough, but are we more concerned with a token message or are we more concerned with the team actually having a championship window opening for a good long time in the not-too-distant future?

And again, we haven't even hit free agency yet and we are still months away from the season starting.

- Slump Buster

Why is it either or? They've got some really smart people working for them. With a bit of money, they could accomplish both. The off season is young though you're right. Still plenty of time for them to make that move.

I think you would agree that nobody has a real idea as to what the Sabres really have aside from a bunch of prospects with promise, right?

The talk of a championship window seems ridiculous, especially when saying in the not too distant future, considering the Sabres management even admit they don't know what they have, and the team hasn't made the (frank)ing playoffs in over a decade.

90% of NFL and NBA draft picks are playing the same year they are drafted. Hockey, what 5 players? So….

when you have a young core of high draft players on the cheap, and 2 first overall picks on the cheap

why the hell not go after the cat when you have 40 mil in cap space

and another 10 mil coming off the books in 12 months with okposo, anderson and girgens

I get it, I really do but, you have to wait and see how Adams turns this thing around. From what i was told the attitude and locker room needed changing first, I think we all know that. Eichel and his bad attitude is gone, so now he focuses and changing the team for the better after 3 GM's failed to do so.

perhaps

again following the yotes blueprint for building an NHL team will not work, has not since the oilers in the early 80s and they had already inherited the best player in the nhl at the time

Smart teams with no real needs other than maximizing cap space make a trade like the Hagel trade. Cat is obviously the superior player but Tampa got their guy at a fraction of the price.

So following along with your logic, teams like Tampa and Colorado weren't trying to win in the years before they won the cup because they weren't shopping?

False, you can expect this to be an annual 1M occurrence from here to eternity.

And again, I don't really take an issue with what you are currently saying.

More so they gave nothing to get. No they gave market price. Market price for wingers suck. So it's possible that another winger might become available and Buf could snag him. Probably not, but who knows.

I dunno, a 24 (26 when he is a UFA) year old 40 goal scorer is worth $9 million for the next 6-7 years.
- Stripes77

depends what he does in Ottawa this year. Does he only score 28 goals away from Kane??

As I said before and what most of you are not realizing is losing culture will produce these young kids to be the next group of players in their prime to want to leave. I'm not suggesting to blow up the pipeline, I just want to see our GM surround the young players with actual good players in their prime. It's not a difficult thing to do and it will allow the young players to be surrounded by winners not guys who work hard but haven't sniffed the playoffs in their X amount of years.. You can still play your young core and cut out the bottom six fat and bottom 5 goaltending
