In some ways I think they have no idea but maybe this is all part of a master plan...?
The Jones trade made absolutely no sense and they paid a fortune. I actually think they are going to try to turn things around quick. They have a lot of cap space this year and a TON next year. I could see them being a big player in free agency, maybe less so this year and more so for next year when there are even more huge names available.
They weren't going to be competitive this year with or without Debrincat. Question is, do they tank this year to try to get Bedard or do they try to set themselves up for a playoff run this year? They will get a really nice prospect at #7 or since they have no goalie they could trade us for Jarry... - MacPatty
A team giving up 2 1st round picks and a stud defenseman prospect to sign a guy 1 year early when they werent going to compete even with him on the roster is one of the biggest self-owns in sports.
I thought it was stupid Rutherford made the Staal trade when he could've had him for free that next summer.

We were able to leverage NYR. J. Staal’s preferred destination was Carolina but there was confidence he’d resign with the Rangers too if they traded for him. |

This sets a nice precedent for Malkins yearly salary. The team may be able to be more competitive next year. |

exactly. give him the 4th year if it means he'll sign for 6 per.
if they can do that and shed even one salary they can position themselves to get malkin someone to play with. he'll still have it for another two years if he can get someone to help carry the mail a bit or god forbid finish. |

If Malkin signs for 6mil or less and we are able to trade Kap, a LHD making 4 mil and potentially move out Zuck. We could make some bigger moves this FA |

LeBrun on TSN: "There's some sore feelings right now between Malkin and the Penguins, they're stuck right now, Malkin wants more than 3 years...I think Evgeni Malkin is readying himself for the possibility of having to go to market and that is a possibility".
It would be un-(frank)ing-real if it this comes down to one stinkin year |

sickening if so.
i wouldnt agree with it, but it would be one thing if they simply said no we want to go in another direction, get younger, reallocate resources, whatever.
but to be in for 3 at reasonable term but not 4 is nonsensical, even if you take away any sentimental angle of it whatsoever. |

Anyone watching the predraft coverage on NHL? This is becoming a douchefest with all this fashion talk and some of these young draftees are mega douches. |

With Letang locked up, I wonder if Marino is in play for a trade? Some of the insiders I've heard on the radio this week say the Pens want to move D. He'd probably be the last one that I would move, but likely would be the easiest. Weren't there rumors about Rutherford trying to get him? Might be able fleece Jimmy when he obsesses on a target. |

Why would they trade away from their weakest position depth wise? |

No way we could have done that. Congrats to MAF. Should shut the door on him ever coming back. Probably retires after this. |

I don't think they should. Just heard his name mentioned several times this week by the local beat guys.

Someone around the league has to value Dumo. That is the move that makes the most sense. They just need to reallocate funds. There's no need for some crazy desperate trade. |

i wouldnt want to move marino either, i just feel he would probably be easiest to move given how people crave righties.
would be cool if someone overvalued dumo. but would also require the pens to free themselves of that way of thinking as well. |

I think it’s just how Hextall values Dumo. The trade price for dmen has been questionable at times and it seems he could find a taker for a mid round pick for the sake of freeing up cap space. Or is he trying to wheel and deal for a 1-1 trade. Dumo for a 2nd line winger |

You just have a surplus for LD. So either you trade Pettersson to someone like DET for a 3rd and a B- prospect or you swap Dumo for a Tatar type player (Top 6 winger with 1 year of term) |
