All three of those guys are in the 6 million dollar range. Marchand has been on a team that he helped win a Cup but I would say Chara was the major factor there. - Whatisavailable
If you think Gaudreau is making 6M this year, you might wanna think again. |

Which is why Calgary is shopping him. They don't think he's worth what he thinks he is. |

Regarding debrinicat's RFA status,
Capfriendly says he has one year left, but people keep mentioning two years on his deal.
Is this because of the arbitration rights once he hits RFA? That if they go to arbitration it can be one year, at which point he'd be a UFA at the end?.
But, he could also sign long term if he so chooses? |

Yeah the second year refers to his arb rights, which are calculated against his actual salary, which in the last year of his deal is 9M. That's why you see the 9/10M numbers thrown out there. He is still under team control, but to keep him they have to qualify him at that number. Does not mean he can't be extended for less than his QO (the team is barred from negotiating any such extension until Jan 1 2023 because he was just acquired). eg Kotkaniemi signed an extension that was less than his upcoming QO with the Canes.
Still, worst case scenario, if he refuses to resign reasonable, the team could flip him at 1/2 retained at the 2024 deadline. There is no indication he'll be a bad player given his stats to date and we should be able to recoup something close to what we paid for him. |

There there, little Howie. It's OK. Everything is just fine. It's a well known fact that lots and lots and lots of 5'7" 165 lbs guys have spearheaded their NHL teams' drive to the Stanley Cup over the years which is why they're always paid more than everybody else on the team. Yes, yes, yes, you are soooo right. - Whatisavailable
Outside of welcoming the team's commitment through the trade and welcoming the the player, I haven't made any claims at all. None. I am willing to let the player have an opportunity to prove himself before making any statements.
You, on the other hand, have put yourself out there in a big way. Not only have you made some pretty disparaging comments, you have also made some bold statements ignoring the trend in the NHL to put more emphasis on skill and speed.
You have made some pretty bold and ignorant statements. If they do not go as prophesied, you are going to look like (even more of) a donkey*.
Perhaps if you had of kept it classy, your opinion would be less open to ridicule.
PS: Henri Richard (5'7" 160 lbs) won 11 Cups which is the most in NHL history.

Before now I don't believe I have ever been rude to you. I made the mistake of having a different opinion from you and from the majority of the people on this thread with respect to the wisdom of acquiring DeBrincat, which is why somebody like you feels comfortable getting insulting. I called the guy a midget so that becomes "pretty disparaging comments" and in our politically correct world you can virtue signal your purity. I have consistently advocated for speed, size and skill but now that you've virtue signaled your purity to everyone you can proceed to lie and say that I've ignorantly ignored things like speed and skill and then gone on to broadly dismiss my bold and ignorant statements whatever they were.
DeBrincat's name was brought up from time to time for a while now and I always thought it was a bad idea, mostly because of his size. That's one of the reasons I don't like Brannstrom or Mete. Now DeBrincat is obviously better than those guys but winning the Cup means going through four grueling rounds of playoff hockey which severely taxes the resources of even your bigger players. You may disagree. Maybe you don't care. Maybe they make the playoffs and your friends stop making fun of you for being a Sens fan. Personally I think signing DeBrincat was a bad move if you're interested in the Sens developing into a perennial threat for the Cup. I seriously hope he's gone within the next two years but even if he is and the Sens recoup more than what they paid for him he may in the meantime have destroyed the team's salary structure and damaged what was once a very visible magical chemistry the team had. We will find out soon enough.
Now you can post one of your oh so clever little pictures. |

Exactly. They'd rather let him walk for nothing than pay him that kind of money. |

Now that's funny. I remember watching Henri Richard growing up in Montreal and I can tell you that DeBrincat is no Henri Richard.
Anyway this is getting boring. Have a great day! |

No one thinks Ottawa is finished. In fact, we’re all waiting for another move now that Matt Murray is a Maple Leaf. One potential target: Florida’s MacKenzie Weegar. It is expected the Panthers will get an extension done with Jonathan Huberdeau, and therefore may not have the room to do similar with Weegar. Florida’s been asked about him, and the Senators are able to do the kind of sparkly picks and prospects package to get it done. This, of course, would allow the Panthers flexibility to do some other things. (Florida and Ottawa are also believed to be competing for Claude Giroux, with Carolina among those peering over their shoulders.)

Maple Leafs take massive gamble with Murray trade (Yost)
To say the Toronto Maple Leafs are taking a risk in net after the acquisition of Murray would be an understatement. Challenged by underperformance and durability, Murray’s two seasons with Ottawa were, in a word, grim.

That's too much money not spent wisely. Dorion has to be more careful when signing contracts now - and he's about to negotiate some big ones. |

There are going to be really good players searching for a team in about 10 days. Teams are letting players walk because of their own cap issues. Some teams are still going to need to make deals to move salaries out in order to sign other players from their own roster. This is not a bad year to push the pause button on UFA signings. But, there will be some teams that rush in and overpay with big offers when a similar play might be available at much less cost.
The guy I would watch is Mikheyev. In right situation he can be a big time goal scorer. Something like Zub, a late bloomer flying under the radar. |

I have always believed that Dorion was on a very short leash having to satisfy an owner who wanted to engage himself directly in the details of contract negotiations.
Erik Karlsson is 4th highest paid player in NHL. Ottawa made the right decision to do a full rebuild. Chicago is following a similar approach to Ottawa but they have accelerated the process and watch for them to be a huge player 4 summers from now. Rebuilding teams take on bad contracts and sign placeholders until their more talented kids are ready for prime time. |

I will get up a new blog tonight, at work all day and family stuff later. I just tweeted this out.
Watch for Chicago or Buffalo to possibly take on the remaining 2 years of Zaitsev's contract for a 2nd rd. pick in 2024 if Dorion can't facilitate a deal with the Coyotes! More to come. |

It would be cool if Scotty came back to Ottawa where it all started for him with Ottawa-Hull Canadiens in the ’50s. Used to live in a rooming house on Holmwood, I think it was, with some Rough Riders if I remember right.

5 years at 2 million per. Makes me ill to think of it. Now everybody praising Dorion for spending assets to get out from under his dumb signings to begin with. I have to wonder if there are other voices involved because these latest moves don't seem as dumb as I've become accustomed to from Dorion.
As for the rest of it as you say time will tell. I know the team will do better this year and maybe even the year after. For me it's a question of how far they will go that's important. - Whatisavailable

Senators Should Avoid Acquiring Chychrun
https://thehockeywriters....avoid-acquiring-chychrun/ - HoweHatrick
I agree 100%.... no need for a LD as he is not very good playing is off side. PD should rather concentrate his efforts to trade for Marino (C.Brown & a 2nd round pick) or Weegar with a bigger package, excluding our 1st 2023.

Chicago got rid of the guy because they don't think he's worth 9 million which is what he gets next year and which is what a new contract will look like. - Whatisavailable
Did they also feel that Kirby Dach wasn't worth keeping for more than his ELC? Have you considered the possibility that just maybe CHI is undergoing a massive burn-down, where DeBrincat/Dach were the only roster assets that would attract 1st round pick compensation? The vast majority of people & pundits seem to regard the trade as a runaway win for the Senators, so just maybe they actually got something right for a change. |

I'm of the opinion they should go hard for Weegar. I think they're knocking on Chychrun because he's younger, cost controlled for longer, and there's a possibility to move Zaitsev in the deal which won't be happening With Florida. But I think Weegar is a better fit. Mobile, big, showed he could hold his own when Ekblad went down, responsible, Ottawa boy, right handed shot, and relatively under the radar considering what he's done to date. There is a lot to like there. |

weegar is too old he will want 5-6M or more long term on his next deal, and i think he is overrated |
