If they do that then passing on Jiricek looks like an even dumber move. |

What’s the purpose of this move?? Strictly to clear out cap space. If so, your are adding another question mark…who takes Provorov’s minutes. He may not be what we all thought he’d be, but I still think he’s the best defenseman we’ve got. |

SUCKERS fix
Philadelphia Flyers
Carolina took a risk on Tony DeAngelo when they inked him to a one-year, $1 million contract and it largely paid off. It’s telling though that even after he scored 10 goals and 51 points in 64 contests last season, the Hurricanes still opted to move on from him. Instead, Philadelphia decided to acquire him along with the 220th overall pick in exchange for the 101st pick, a 2023 third-round pick, and a 2024 second rounder. They then signed him to a two-year, $10 million contract.
DeAngelo is a controversial defenseman, in part due to his past off-ice issues, but also because he struggles at his own end of the ice. He can help the Flyers on the power play, but for what the Flyers paid to acquire him on top of his cap hit, it seems like a stretch for Philadelphia.
More than that though, it’s another indication that the Flyers seem to have no sense of direction. They don’t appear good enough to be serious competitors, but they’re also allergic to building towards the future. As a result, the team is just stuck in neutral. Over the last 10 seasons they’ve made the playoffs four times, making trades like this that don’t do enough to make them a strong team in the short-term and only serve to hurt them in the long run by trading away potential assets.
As for the draft itself, taking Cutter Gauthier with the fifth overall pick is good. He’s a product, but one who has the potential to develop into a top-six forward. They didn’t have another pick until 69 though and outside of Gauthier, it’s entirely possible that no one they took will play any significant time in the NHL.

Bias for action? I get the sense Fletcher is twisting in the wind because he knows his job is on the line. A desperate GM potentially makes for a foolish GM. |

Yeah, they need to bring Braun back or somebody like him. The entire d-corps is heavily skewed toward offense side of the puck right now.
The right side of the D is scary bad in their own zone w/o Ellis. - Tomahawk
Andrej Sustr. Younger and cheaper than Braun. Flyers could get him at base salary but Fletcher may want to overpay.

Hiring Torts is equivalent to the introduction of Gritty. Both designed for the locals who don’t know anything to think “yeoo let’s go down to the Flyboys game they got Tortorella!”
This franchise is over. They should be sold, moved. I don’t really care at this point. - FloHaake
Why so negative? Torts has a proven track record to bring order to a team that lacks it. On that point alone I was ok with it….oh and lay the F off Gritty…. |

Thanks for the company press release Bill. So when is the Kate Smith statue going back up? They opened the can of political correctness worms, now they have to follow through and be consistent. Why the about face all the sudden?
- StepfordSam
I touched on everything involved here, ran two first-hand verbatim from players who know him (one of whom is of strongly opposite political views from TDA) and discussed the hockey side and draft pick ramifications of it as well. I put right out that I have concerns if he can produce here what he did in Carolina. Hardly spin.
Frankly, you can stick the "company press release" stuff you know where. I resent it.
Bill, the counter-factual, low-information reactions to your work in general (with the post you quoted being just the latest) often leave me smh. Yes, you are paid by the Flyers for some of what you write. Are you ever influenced by that to pull punches somewhat? Possibly, at least subconsciously. But personally, I think you offer terrific value and insight, so if you ever are holding back, I don't care.
Certainly, your post on the DeAngelo trade was not such a case. I think unless you had said flat out that you hate the trade and Fletcher should be fired, there is a significant segment of the fan base that would rain scorn down upon you, regardless of whether you raise the salient concerns (as you did in your piece) or not.
Having said all that, my gut reaction is that this is a bad trade -- very, very, high risk trading for a volatile person who easily could implode. But, I hope Tony keeps his mouth shut about everything except hockey, stays off social media entirely, and plays well. I saw someone note that he is being paid to play hockey, not to go on Meet the Press. He should take note of that, and lay low.
Thanks for what you do, Bill. |

This is what some have an issue with. If he is scared that his credentials may be pulled because of what he publishes -- that is a HUGE issue. The same thing applies to Comcast employees. If they feel that their job is in jeopardy and they pull punches to keep said job, they are doing themselves and their readership a serious disservice.
I am not saying that ANYONE does this, but the fact that the thought crosses my mind does make it a possibility

100%...the market for cap dump/relief was set with Kassian and Mrazek and it's not going to be cheap. What's ridiculous is to sell even more of the future away to rid yourself of JVR who only has a year remaining....wait it out and actually get picks for him at the deadline or let him walk. |

So getting away from the Deangelo talk, I see the development camp info was released today....looking at the roster a few players are missing. Jay O'Brien is not there, but I know he just had hip surgery, although we never heard much about that from the Flyers...Bobby Brink isn't listed as attending though either. Is he injured/recovering from injury as well?
Further to that, the release mentions who is running the camp...
"The camp will be run by the Flyers Player Development Staff, which consists of Senior Advisor to the General Manager/Player Development, Mike O'Connell and Director of Player Development, Kjell Samuelsson, as well as John Riley, Brady Robinson and Chris Stewart."
I swear Bill mentioned recently in a post that Samuelsson had a reduced role in development now, but he's still listed here in a key role as the director of player development.....and I thought Chris Stewart was no longer with the organization, but he's back again working at the development camp? Is this info/release from today correct? - Flyerfan2868
I said Kjell oversees the development program now rather than spending the season out in the field.

I have little faith in Ellis being healthy for next season, but if Ellis does come back, what would be the possible defensive pairings with the addition of Tony D? |

Can we please just put away these stupid statements about DeAngelo's racial slurs!! It happened several years ago, he was young, he got angry, he made a mistake. Who here has not said something stupid when you were angry? Just get off your collective high horses and move on; let's judge DeAngelo by who he is right now and how he players. And from what I can see, he is a darn good offensive defenseman that is cleaning up his game defensively and is in the prime of his career! |

Hopefully one day the Flyers recognize you and hire you. I’m being serious. A man who recognizes every situation every mistake should be paid millions. - Keyser soze

How do you explain that the Canes gave up a lot more scoring chances when he was on the ice? - MJL
Hmm .. and how do you explain that Slavin was DeAngelo's partner when the Canes gave up those scoring chances? And yet the Canes were the best defensive team in the league with DeAngelo playing more than 20 minutes a game ... interesting. |

I was with you until you said he was cleaning up his game defensively. He isn't. He is downright awful defensively.
