Hmm .. and how do you explain that Slavin was DeAngelo's partner when the Canes gave up those scoring chances? And yet the Canes were the best defensive team in the league with DeAngelo playing more than 20 minutes a game ... interesting. - jd250
It's called goaltending. Look at the numbers. Metric wise defensively, DeAngelo is in the bottom 4% in the league.

I said Kjell oversees the development program now rather than spending the season out in the field. - bmeltzer
Thank you for the clarification, I wasn't sure about the exact wording from the post the other day. So in terms of the pecking order regarding player development, does it go Tom O'connell, Kjell, then Riley, Robinson and Stewart etc, or is O'connell just an advisor and Kjell is the head as a director? |

Can we please just put away these stupid statements about DeAngelo's racial slurs!! It happened several years ago, he was young, he got angry, he made a mistake. Who here has not said something stupid when you were angry? Just get off your collective high horses and move on; let's judge DeAngelo by who he is right now and how he players. And from what I can see, he is a darn good offensive defenseman that is cleaning up his game defensively and is in the prime of his career! - jd250
Nah, never tossed racial slurs at someone in anger, nor have I been involved in a physical altercation with anyone at work. It’s not in my character, but if you see something in him that appeals to you, then it might be part of yours.

It just doesn’t make sense to bring in a guy that we just had to salary dump last year, he’s on his 5th team in as many years, something is wrong |

I understand why you might be perplexed: I will give you 3 reasons I am aware of, there might be other more important reasons I do not comprehend/know about.
1. In these models, the modeler tries to separate out the effect of pairings. So, for example, lets say a player has an average Corsi of 55% but only 50% when paired with a specific partner. Then in computing his stats, the "partner effect dragging him down" would be separated out in the common minutes. Thus, even though Slavin and Tony might play 80% of their minutes in tandem, that does not mean that 80% of the weight given to their stats will be the same. The effect of Tony dragging down Slavin will be factored in, and Slavin dragging Tony up will be similarly factored (in those common 80% minutes) and adjustments will be made to the raw data .
2. Not all of the stats together count the same. For example, if Tony takes a penalty and Slavin doesn't when they are together, that affects Tony's stats negatively but not Slavin's.
3. The weight assigned to minutes they do not play together of course plays a role in and of itself (not just through 1 above).

So what desperate move is Chuck going to pull off to clear cap space after he finds out the market to trade JVR is going to be prohibitive?

Nor did I, but even people who are jailed get a chance to change - wcorvette
On paper. Not so much in reality. They are set up to fail. They have a very, very hard time finding a job. They find a lot of difficulty in adjusting. Often, their POs are pos who are pathological bullies who care only about power tripping. Sometimes, they commit crimes just to get back to a predictable lifestyle they are used to.
I have a friend I have since fallen out with who did 7 years in max security. He studied and graduated in law from a named school, and made dean's list. Could never get his law license in any state. Had problems building credit.
Data bears out these sentiments. The US has of course by far the largest prison pop in the world. It also has a ridiculously high recidivism (back in jail rate) within 3 years. I think It is 60% or something like that.

Sure. Ask me in at least a week's time. Then I would know you are serious and not just trying to use what would likely be a detailed answer for a springboard to launch your own biases, Holmes. |

I count 3 teams. A year in CAR, 4 years with the NYR and now Philly. Even though he changes teams, someone always wants him. So there’s that.

People want to over blow things. The Canes and Coyotes liked him. Just the nature of the business. NYR had the falling out. Not making it light. It is something if they suspend you for an entire year.
He rebounded last year. Not our choice. Let’s see what he does. People are welcome to go to another team until they do something they don’t like. |

If he can co-exist with Torts and they don’t overplay him, I think he brings a lot. He’ll help with the PP, transition and breakout. Pair him with Sanheim. Travis makes everyone look better.
