A quick google search shows it costs anywhere from 7k to 20k a year to play youth hockey in a competitive serious manner.

I don’t know where you’re from, but that’s an insane amount of money. I’ll split the difference and say it’s 10k to play. In one year.

Who else but the rich can afford this, while also raising other children, work, bills etc

No it's not correct that every kid who plays NHL hockey came from a rich family and is privileged.

How about being able to invest upwards of 20,000 dollars a year on sometimes multiple children who play. If you can afford that, on top of all the expenses of life, I’d say you’re in a much different tax bracket than most people. Yeah, that’s rich enough for me bud. Any other questions?

Second jobs. Overtime. Home equity loans. 20 grand is a lot of money, then again it's not. I know many parents who put their kids through college. Costs way more than 20 grand. They aren't rich people. Do you know what a quality high level private high school costs these days? My nephew goes to a private high school. Costs 21 grand a year. His parents pay for it. They aren't rich people.
