Just to make sure we understand this correctly.. this move is a colossal failure cause fans are upset on twitter???
Can you confirm, cause I think Fletcher better get to twitter and maybe ask Carolina if the trade can be rescinded.. - Joe Nardone

To have someone like DeAngelo play for the same franchise that Wayne Simmonds put his heart and soul into, on and off the ice, is just wrong.
He’s a bad guy. The fact that someone like Hayes will sit there and defend him is not surprising. Boys club bullpoop, he’s never faced real consequences for anything he’s done. It’s a joke. Hockey is for everyone right? Yea right. We know who this game is for, it’s shown to us time and time again. It’s for guys just like DeAngelo. And Hayes. And whoever else would stand alongside this guy and say “oh good teammate. Fans will
Love him.”
I’m sure he will be popular in south Philly, just won’t be for his play so much as his attitude. Fits right in down in certain sections of South Philly….. - FloHaake

David Jiricek -- D (HC Plzen, Czech Extraliga): Mid-season knee surgery after an injury in the opening game of the World Junior Championship created question marks as to whether the big-framed Czech blueliner (6-foot-3, 189 pounds) would drop significantly on the 2022 Draft. Jiricek returned to play in the spring, however, and appeared in five games at the 2022 IIHF World Championship. He appeared to be fine in terms of skating and ranginess. Widely considered the best shutdown defenseman in this year's Draft crop, Jiricek is also a promising puck mover. He has a booming shot from the point, but there is debate over how much offensive upside Jiricek has. Playing against grown men in the top Czech league this past season, Jiricek posted five goals and 11 points in 29 games. Being a right-handed shooter also boosts his case for potentially being selected in the top five. Jiricek is considered a high-floor -- potential top-four on a blueline -- prospect. |

It’s interesting to me to see those on the left, preach something but want to cancel somebody so quickly if they dare disagree.
I’m not talking about the racist stuff, but about the allegiance to Trump.
The price paid to acquire the player was asinine, but I’ll give him a chance. |

I wasn’t gonna but (frank) it I’ll throw my 2 cents in …
Things Tony d said… (frank)ing ignorant beyond for a young person to say.
Casting stones anyone?
The dude I think has proven he deserves a chance to SHOW those couple incidents were young and stupid and not true self
Now poop happens again no excuses you done.
I will not believe that not 1 person hasn’t said or did something so stupid when young and dumb that they didn’t really mean or believe just to push a button on someone. And not regret it.
You show you deserve a chance by not doing. He’s done that. Time to let this man prove himself - Stayin alive
I would go with this approach as well, personally. But he is being set up to fail in this town. He will need to be Nick Lidstrom perfect to escape that inevitability.
I am more disappointed with what arichardson22 said about chants in Flyers home games. Just suggests to me what I have been suspecting for awhile even more strongly: that the Flyers degeneration is not just confined to franchise but also the kind of people they are appealing to more and more. They are already a very distant 4rth in support in the city, and in 5-10 years time, I suspect they will be a fringe group, like the Union was 10 odd years ago.

I think there’s plenty of criticism to share regarding the TDA in a hockey and personnel context. As far as the off-ice stuff, it generally seems he’s attempted to learn and make up for it with contrition. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he takes his second chance seriously, much like Michael Vick and Odubel Herrera, unless proven otherwise. In the end, I want this move to actually work out. |

Was he a good teammate last year by all accounts? You seem to be hung up on the number of teams he’s been on. That would matter if his immaturity pops up again. From a hockey perspective, they should be evaluating on what happened last year and how he fits here. As I said I have criticisms of the move, but if they done their homework on his conduct and it checks out, I’m not going to dwell on it. |

Nah. I had a very bad temper as youngster playing sports of all kinds. Embarrassing dumb behavior, but I never even thought to utter any kind of slur at anyone.
He’s been twice knocked for abuse of officials as well. 5 teams in 6 years. Yeah seems like a real stand up dude players love having in the room. - FloHaake
It’s not only a slur. I can guarantee you at some point in youth and stupidity did or said something that was highly offensive to someone. Maybe you weren’t called out on it. Maybe you heard or were complacent to such things by others and were grouped in.
The point is you have to earn the privilege to show it wasn’t your true feelings. Or as is with anyone. The dude has shown imo no issues. Personally I can attest to a certain old school Italian heritage of maybe not slurs towards other to be down right nasty but certainly past of a culture. That is easily repeated by actions or Language. Yes it has changed a lot over the years. Maybe for the better on most cases but like I said the dude has shown he at least proven the chance.
Again it’s a last strike situation. Some certainly won’t want to hear that. I just hope to maybe make people try to think even if you don’t believe you’ve done it if it were your kid or something that did and said a few stupid things especially in a culture where language and etc seen you’d probably want the kid to be given a chance to prove it especially when the kids had shown no further problems.
Would I stick my neck out? No. Because I don’t know him personally but I’m not gonna hang some 26 year old for stupid poop they said when 18-22 years old. |

Please show these racist comments he has allegedly said. I will wait. - furio16
Will you take his dad's word for it? Because he defends his son's slurs here as just everyday talk that the two of them use together.

Two OHL suspensions, punches thrown at a teammate, and a suspension for abusing refs in the NHL. Lotta smoke.
Look, the guy can mature. I'm certainly not the man I was in my early 20s. And yeah, perhaps people are a little sensitive more than ever, but we can't deny that it happened. |

Yeah. Makes perfect logical sense actually. He paid a huge price. And has shown he’s seemed to learn. Should be an example.
You do or say stupid poop there’s repercussions.
And you have to work hard to gain trust of many many different people. In all different situations.
Put it this way would it have made sense for him to stay on say 1 or 2 teams and have only those to prove self? No exactly.

DeAngelo is a more well rounded player at this point. Not a rest it all on +- guy but DeAngelo was +30 and ghost was -54. The knock on Ghost was his difficulty in his own zone. DeAngelo is no poop down defender but I think he has shored that end up a bit. By the way. I still think Ghost is a talented player. Just weak defensively. - peesinwind
I don’t know if DeAngelo deserves any credit for this but the Canes were one of the better teams I’ve seen this season to take a lead by one or two goals and then Suffocate the other team defensively. Sounds like that’s all Rod Brind’Amour in terms of style but if DeAngelo bought into that style, he should be good here with Torts. |

Kinda shows my point doesn’t it. Kid grew up with it. Very easy to repeat it.
I’ll give an example. I once worked at a Jewish temple at around age 21. I walked up to a rabbi and told him someone dropped their Jew beanie and handed him the yarmulke. I had absolutely no idea. He just politely told me it’s not called a Jew beanie.
Was it offensive? Idk. Probably. He certainly wasn’t angered. He was polite and educated me.
The important point is did I get fired? No. Should I have? Should I never be able to work in a Jewish setting again?

Just gonna throw this out there too since there seems to be a little too much intolerance in Tony d signing for my liking.
What about the Canadian hockey player fiasco quietly going on? What if hart was one of the players involved?
Does he get hung? From all accounts he’s a stand up almost choir boy. What if he’s involved but didn’t know the girl was somewhat resisting?
I mean he’s been on 5 teams since 2016.
Does he get hung?
And that’s by far worse than what Tony d did.
Curious to thoughts
And I hope to god he wasn’t one of the players |

He should kinda know better with the times, though. Especially with his generation.
I’m not one of the people hanging him. I just think he’s got a bad reputation with a lot of the players in the league, and it’s on the record. He’s earned it.
I believe most people can change. Not all. Most. And I’m all for that.
Like I said, I’m certainly not the man I was when I was younger. I doubt most of us who have lived to see 40 are.
And Jew beanie? Really? that’s a little rough. I could see someone outside of the culture call it a prayer cap or something if you have no idea, but whatever. I wouldn’t pull what you did to a stranger. Maybe if you're Don Rickles. There was an It’s Always Sunny episode early on where they would call that ‘dropping a hard J’. Pretty funny episode. Might have even been the pilot.
Thankfully, that Rabbi was a good man and handled it respectfully. Wisdom is supposed to be a virtue for people in that role, so I’m sure he’s used to handling situations launch as those.

This “Last chance” we’re talking ourselves into giving him is also like at least his 6th chance since junior between all the fights, bigotry, bullying and suspensions. He is who he is. It’s a joke at this point to expect otherwise.
It’s only a matter of time before he has another incident and no one should be shocked when it inevitably happens. |

He was a kid when he said those things, people make mistakes. I know you are perfect and never said something you regret, especially when you were young. Want me to post moments of most of your liberal heroes, as adults, doing worse things than what you are condemning this guy for? |

This makes sense to me. We need to offer grace to people who make mistakes, if not we just build walls and most likely push them further to the extreme. Actions do have consequences, grace comes after |

Great article, Bill. Thank you for the insight and especially the quotes and opinions of actual players who know the man and have played with him. Hopefully he produces on the ice and fits in with the team in the manner Kevin Hayes had experienced in the past.
Do you believe (or have any information you can share) that this move is an indication that Ellis is done? Additionally, what type of additional moves do you expect in the coming days/weeks? |
