Apples and oranges. The vast majority of these guys won't be here for 3 or 4 years (or ever). Better yet, you can keep them down in Roch if they aren't better than what we have. You have a ton of options in that scenario. I agree with Adams stance on remaining flexible but I get why a lot of you feel different. - Slump Buster
Like Jack Quinn or Peterka If the Sabres added a legit top 6 talent? |

Yup, we agree on making the playoffs. But making it just to make it doesn't necessarily get you closer. Should be interesting to see if Pittsburgh gives Malkin the 4th year that he wants. Pitt and Washington should be aging out of contention nicely over the next few years.
Either way I don't think we ever had a shot at the guys that you like because they are going to be signed before free agency. I wouldn't mind KA making a hockey trade in the mold of Drury/Briere. - Slump Buster

I think being a playoff team more often then not absolutely gets you closer. Free agents don't want to go to a shatty team that never makes the playoffs. They want to go somewhere where they have the chance to win the cup every year.
The Bills are a perfect example. no Playoffs for years shatty FA (minus a few) Now Playoff/Super contenders, VON Miller and a crap ton of others that would LOVE to play for them.
Same would be true for the Sabres... Gotta get in the tourny before you can win the cup... I am at the mode of JUST GET ME IN

Freaking this.
Imagine if the Bills didn’t change their identity before getting guys like Diggs, Miller etc

Those guys replace black holes in Cody Eakin types.
Add in a top 6 forward and you have a legit forward core. - sbroads24
JJ and Quinn can be those guys... Only better.... Why are we not letting them play in the NHL?
What else do they have to do in the A?

We don’t.
We hired an analytics department because guys like Danton Heinen and Nick Aube-Kubel are under the radar pick ups that could give us the depth needed to actually play some games in April. But hey, can’t block guys. - sbroads24
The "don't block guys" comment is attributed to taking on big contracts. If we can find guys that aren't that, go for it.

We didn't start adding until all of the pieces were in place. We added some small pieces along the way but no big contracts.
Diggs was a football trade.
Once the window opened we got Von Miller. That's when you make your move.
Patience. Nobody was saying "just get in". The Bills process was to draft and develop.

Maybe the Sabres should try a "Hockey Trade" it might just make them better. |

Our Allen is signed for only 2 more years.
I would really like our core set before adding a 9 million dollar contract from an outside source |

The Bills had to go bargain hunting first a WR (Bease and Brown) and had to overpay on both before making a trade for Diggs.
They added Miller when they're knocking on the doorstep of a Championship, they also have one of the best QBs if not the best in the league.
The Sabres are finally starting to right the ship, but unlike the NFL you can't get out of bad contracts in the NHL so they have to be careful

The bills did their damage through the draft.
Used free agency and trades to give them the final pieces.
Is that not what the Sabres are doing ? They just don’t have the luxury of having 5 rookies play for them year one like in the NFL |

It took a miracle Andy Dalton pass and the Bills benched their starting QB for Nate Petermann
Of course they tore it down the following season...
