You have a very aggressive take on this. I'd say the more popular side (and the league-wide trend) is don't burn a year if you don't have to and bridge everyone, except obvious franchise players.

Hard cap sport requires aggressive and decisive commitment to an idea. Without it, you just recycle false hope on the path to 9th place using the same goo goo dolls montage from the 2007 playoff run.
