Trader Joe’s makes these pickle flavored potato chips. They’re pretty amazing. |

Talked to my friend in the penguins organization, who has nothing to do with the front office, but things travel around pretty quick.
He said talks with Rakell are ongoing, team is hopeful something can get done. He also says there is about a 75/25 feeling that the deal with Malkin gets done as we get closer. He wasnt sure timing wise when it would get done. But things are much more upbeat than they were 2 weeks ago. He said FSG wants Malkin resigned and its mainly Hextall holding out.
The feeling he has is that the organization feels they will compete another 4-5 years. If Malkin drops off but still carries that cap hit after year 3, they would have to buy him out like Jack Johnson or give up assets to move his contract. |

No that was a good deal.
The number of people who suddenly believe Rossi is astounding though. Guy has been a punchline forever. |

The way I see it Hextall has no choice but to re-sign him. He'd get canned if can't reach a deal with Geno. Fair lol |

I kind of wonder Hex's mindset since it seems like he didn't want to resign Letang or Malkin and from multiple reports it seems like FSG has told him both are a must. Was he thinking of trading Crosby as well and tanking like the Blackhawks? Was he thinking of making multiple trades to fill the gaps like JT Miller? Was he going to try to sign a bunch of RFAs to replace them (since he usually likes younger talent)? I really wonder what he is/was thinking.

Yeah I find taking Rossi's word as the gospel a bit strange as well. I've never ever liked that guy. I remember TSN up here were using him as the Pens analyst and he'd be a guest sometimes. He was saying that Malkin wanted to move on and wasn't going to extend with the Pens the last time, like in 2013 hahah. Dude is f'n clown.

Usually when a situation doesn't make any sense from the outside looking in, there is more to the story. I have a hard time believing that the 4th year alone would be the deal breaker.
I think it's fair for the Pens to have reservations about Geno retiring after a frontloaded 2 years. I wonder if there are any discussions about a NTC coming into play also? Looks like Letang has no protection until year 4 of the contract, and then it is just a 10 team NTC. Wonder if they want something similar with Geno rather than a full NMC.
I know in everyone's mind here that there is a 3 year window and then it doesn't matter what happens but there is an ownership group that paid what, $800M to buy this team... they didn't do it to be good for a couple years and then turn into Arizona.
Ideal situation for me is getting Geno back at $6M per year but having him switch to the wing. I think he will just be so much more effective not needing to worry about faceoffs and the defensive side of the puck. Just let him run wild and counter attack like Kessel used to do. |

I'm not sure either get qualified but I could see one or both signing extensions. If we could get Kap for $2M that would be a pretty good value for the bottom 6. Heinen I think has earned more but I expect someone else to sign him for more than we can afford to. I'd love it if we could get him signed to a contract similar to McGinns as he is much better than McGinn.

Ehh. I don't really believe him most of the time, but he's probably the beat writer closest to Geno. He also hit the 6 year Letang deal a few days earlier.

Smart business says you qualify them. That way at the least they’re an asset you can trade. The QOs are small and neither poses much risk in arbitration. |
