It was never about term, only about the money. Let's see who has offered Malkin more money.

There are factors here that we may never know. The deal structure, if the dollars stayed the same by going four years, etc...

For all we know they back-loaded the deal thinking Geno might not make it to the end of the deal.

That’s the thing though, if it’s a franchise icon, I don’t see how money is an issue. Like FSG has billions, they probably couldn’t care less about how much they’re spending to keep him, just the AAV for remaining competitive.

I think we all know someone is going to definitely overpay Malkin with both term and money per year.

My man, I've been a diehard Pens fans for thirty years and won't stop. I'm saying it will be hard to watch without him because watching him in another jersey when they could have kept him will be tough to watch. Whatever little bit of window was left is now done and could have been avoided.

Let me ask this, if he does leave, is any of that on Malkin? Everyone is saying just give him the fourth year, if that's the hold up. Why can't Malkin just take the three? Is that really insulting to him to get one year less?

There are probably so many details we don't know. Hextall had this situation very closed off. We don't know if he gave him the fourth year, but bumped the salary down to $5M. Maybe the structure of the deal was bad. Maybe Hextall just handled things so poorly that Geno was left with a bad taste in his mouth.

I think if JR was still GM, this deal gets done immediately.

If JR was GM, the deal would have been done immediately. However, just like him signing JJ and giving up a first round pick for Kapenen, he would have overpaid! Been bidding against himself the whole time!

Nothing on the market makes us better. This.must be part of Hextalls unwritten plan.

The Penguins NEVER offered 4 years to Evgeni Malkin. His camp reportedly tried to get there with GM Ron Hextall, and closest they got was “what it could look like.” The 4-year contract was NOT on table from Penguins.

He’s also reporting that Malkin feels unwanted and they waited too long to start negotiating. Sounds like the door is just about shut

Tbh I think JR would have overpaid them a bit. Especially Rust, Letang, and Malkin. Plus idk if POJ would be on this team right now if JR were GM. I do find it messed up that it is all over 1 year that we couldn't get a deal in place. Hopefully Hex has a heck of a backup plan which Hopefully isn't a line of Zucker- ERod and Kap for the 2nd line....

I think it will be even worse if they end up signing someone like Trochek for 5-6 years at 7 mil/yr.
