Fair few UFA “deals” leaked thus far. Can’t help but wonder if Gaudreau will be one as well. - Wildschwein
Listening to Friedman and Marek's podcast yesterday and they said Lou is real old school and doesn't do any of the "not-tampering but actually tampering" negotiating before 12pm on UFA day.
So I think the Isles being in on Gaudreau/Kadri means that there won't be any deals announced at 12:01pm |

Frank Seravelli reporting the Flames offered him an 8 year contract just north of 10 mil per. Try doing that over 7 years. |

After talking to some people, both inside and outside the @NHLFlyers organization, it appears Chuck doesn't want to pay the asking price for someone to take on JVR's salary. That's completely understandable. But it would also be the death knell on a potential Gaudreau deal.
This is potentially good news - eichiefs9

I mean there's no chance he's getting $11.5M on the open market, nobody is going to go there with the cap being mostly-flat for another 2 years.
If he doesn't take that new offer from the Flames than his #1 concern is definitely not money. If he wants to be on the back on the east coast then his realistic options are pretty much currently the Devils and Islanders (assuming Philly doesn't find some GM
that wants JvR).
The Devils have the space to offer much more money but the Islanders could likely clear the necessary room to fit his contract and are significantly better than the Devils. |

I know some on here envision the islanders as a team that just took a season off. The stars weren’t in line. A one off. Whatever. I’m not sure if the players around the league have that same thought when it comes to the islanders or whether they think we’re a great team. Not saying they think we’re terrible but I’m not sure how many, if any, think contender when talking about the islanders. Point being I’m not sure how swayed JG would be due to how good we are as compared to the devils… |

Not claiming they'll be a contender but they will almost certainly be better than the Devils. Also, players around the league don't sit on the internet nitpicking over this or that like we do. They see a team that's one year removed from back-to-back ECF's.
Maybe he doesn't feel that way and he just wants to play as close to home for as much money as possible and that's NJ and we're just SOL.
Or maybe he ultimately decides to just take the offer from Calgary. But if he doesn't take Calgary's offer by 11:59pm tonight then they lose the ability to sign him for the 8th year, which almost certainly spells the end of him with that organization.
But I don't believe the Isles are as bad as they were last year. A lot of wacky poop went on that was out of their control. Not claiming they should be on anyone's "favorites" list for the Cup, but they're a lot more competitive than they were last season.
edit: Also, his options are somewhat limited IF it's the east coast that he wants.
Rangers can't fit him, Pens can't fit him, Philly can't fit him.
Caps won't be able to fit him after they sign Kuemper.
Panthers have literally no cap space and Tampa doesn't have a need for him.
Carolina could come out of left field, but they have bigger needs on the blueline and aren't the kind of organization to sign a guy to a ticket that big.
Boston can't fit him.
Columbus is Columbus and is going hunting for a d-man.
Detroit/Buffalo/Montreal aren't in the market for big name UFA's.
Ottawa already got their big acquisition.
Isles and Devils check a lot of boxes for him and make a lot of sense for both sides |

I suspect they view the Islanders as a team that's hard to play against.......kind of like Andrew Ladd. But if you can go up a couple goals, they likely won't catch up, because they don't have much offense. |

Expect Islanders to offer Johnny Gaudreau around 9 million per for the max 7 years. The Devils will likely offer more. But make no mistake: if Gaudreau becomes a UFA in the next few hours, Islanders are a serious player.

So, less then what Calgary “reportedly” offered minus a year. That just means he didn’t want to play for Calgary. He would be leaving somewhere around 14 million on the table when all is said and done. Would love to have him if we could get him at a reasonable price I just don’t believe it. Would rather have Kane in the hopes Chicago retains a chunk of salary. Always been a fan. |

Gotta clear cap space though. I know they would have a couple months to get that done, but still a tall ask with only $11m currently. |

Patty has one more year at $10.5m. I'm not saying I don't want him, because I'd love to have him, but I don't know how much he'd want for his next contract. |

Yeah I don’t know either. He’s still producing but will be declining as far as production goes. We know that, he knows that, his agent does. Not sure if he would sign an extension with whatever club trades for him or would bank on a good season? If Chicago retained a chunk of salary I would be willing to trade next years first, whatever prospect they want, and a second or whatever filler they wanted for a year of Kane. I think he’s worth it. |

Agreed. We have a better shot with Kane but the only way that happens is if the rangers can’t find a way to make it work imo. With that said I see neither happening for us |

There’s no doubt in my mind that Lou is going to offer Johnny Hockey a deal. He would be crazy not to and there aren’t any GMs that won’t be kicking tires. Now will JG accept it and feel the Islanders are a good fit? My opinion is yes.
Offer of 9 million per for 7 years.
