First I do not believe this team is a contender for the cup as is. I have stated numerous times in these threads that the Isles need to make a trade. I put several names out there. My point is to not spend just to spend. At this point it is not wasting another season. The top guys that could have made a difference are gone.
The second tier guys are gone. The only way anything happens now is through trade. Bottom line. - Nfdbulldawg
On this we agree. |

Keep in mind that it was Philly that had to walk away from JG, not the other way around. That WAS his choice. I do think the taxes could have been a factor in JG's decision to not choose NJ and NY when you consider it could mean up to an additional $2m per season in deductions. Anyone who doesn't think this plays a factor is fooling themselves (I know you didn't say that).
Clearly winning wasn't a major factor here. Theoretically JG chose the next closest to home suitor NOT in NY or NJ,. I'd love to hear his candid explanation but doubt we'll get one - keaner17
I’m just busting your chops when I bring up the tax jokes I think you know that but with that said what does this mean? Just give up nobody’s coming here because of taxes now? Hasn’t stopped players from going to the rangers, kovalchuck to the devils, I can go on and on. I think it’s a reason to ponder for a player but far from THE reason. There’s tax implications good and bad everywhere. Also factor in lifestyle which is a more commanding need for multi millionaires. |

On an unrelated note, who wouldn't like to be a fly on the wall of the Flyers' dressing room next season? Torts, Rocky Thompson and Tony DeAngelo??? Nobody would need to take the temperature in that room! |

Yeah, I get it. I think we all have to realize though when mentioning Panarin, Gaudreau and JT, all three went elsewhere for likely very different reasons. JT flat out wanted to go home. Panarin's girlfiend is a model and naturally wanted NYC. Gaudreau? Who knows?
But we all know how short thw earning window is for pro atheletes, so potentially losing millions to play one place as opposed to another...for many that's not even a consideration.
We have a new beautiful building, great ownership and an area that the players love to stay. Maybe Lou's Steinbrenner approach is top much for a lot of NHL players, but this problem existed long before he got there. The NY blood thirsty taxes on thw otherhand..
Ultimately I would image there are multitude of factors involved but that has to be a big one |

I think it’s exactly why Lou didn’t or hasn’t traded any assets. He knows the teams age as well and if they do suck this year then without assets in the system the retooling and rebuild is tougher imho. There are some core young players like Barzal, SOrOkin, Dobson, Romanov, Beau ( start the peanut gallery ) etc. so I do think Lou has the future in mind if this team does not succeed this year. - nyisles7
He did trade assets, though. He traded the first round pick for a guy who could help now. And he's traded every first round pick for years. It's just a slower burn of assets that eventually leads you to the same bare cupboard.
I'd argue the real assets for a possible rebuild are the aging players. But those are the guys you don't get rid of unless you know your window is closed, which is why I think it's now or never for them. If they go all-in now and it doesn't work, those players that we consider the core could still fetch a decent return for a rebuild. Someone would certainly want a Nelson as second-line center, or Lee to park in front of the net, etc. If they keep hanging on to those players for years waiting for the stars to perfectly align before going all-in, they become albatrosses rather than assets.
Anyway, I think Lou wants to go for it this year. Heck, I feel like he sort of bet his job on it when he fired Trotz...as in, if they don't have a killer season this year, who does he blame? There doesn't seem to be much motivation for him to wait and see; that's why I think he's going to make a move. |

It's amazing how BD continually wanted everyone to believe how brilliant Snow was, talking about their sports analytics genius etc and always telling fans how impatient they were, but it took him like two months to jump all over Lou like a bitter ex. My guess is he knew someone closeish to Snow and lost his contact after he left...now just sits in the dark complaining. |

Money is always an important factor but we’ll agree to disagree on this one
Every year there’s a new barrage of excuses. This year it’s taxes! Whatever, let’s move on I hope Ben Shelly burns this tax thread shortly. |

It's funny that I said yesterday maybe Lou didn't want to overpay and mortgage the future. A few people stated that if you're in "win now mode" forget about the future.
I don't think you can get rid of all your assets and sign a player(s) for more money than you have to spend just to win one cup. Then what? Tear it all down and go full rebuild? Personally, I want to have multiple shots at the cup. I want to have a strong team now and five years from now.
Obviously none of know what transpired yesterday. Maybe us having a defense-first type of system along with "Lou's rules" played a factor in JG's decision. Pretty sure money played a big part. But you have an offense-minded player that wants to put points on the board. Not sure he wants to chase around in the D zone and step in front of shots.
Not sure if we'll ever know. I think Ledecky/Malkin want to win. I think that's obvious. If we fail to make the playoffs this year or get bounced in the first round, I don't know how safe Lou's job is. |
