Johnny Gaudreau: “I’ve gotten to play here many times, and every time it’s a lot of fun to play here. There’s a good young group here, and that attracted me too. Me and my wife thought it was a really good fit for us. The best one, personally.
This was always a place circled on my list. … I heard so many great things from past players. It made me feel really comfortable with my decision to come here.”

BULLSH!T!! It was money. Just say it, JG. What a load of crap. Saying it was always circled (if he did indeed say that).
It's funny that I said yesterday maybe Lou didn't want to overpay and mortgage the future. A few people stated that if you're in "win now mode" forget about the future.
I don't think you can get rid of all your assets and sign a player(s) for more money than you have to spend just to win one cup. Then what? Tear it all down and go full rebuild? Personally, I want to have multiple shots at the cup. I want to have a strong team now and five years from now.
Obviously none of know what transpired yesterday. Maybe us having a defense-first type of system along with "Lou's rules" played a factor in JG's decision. Pretty sure money played a big part. But you have an offense-minded player that wants to put points on the board. Not sure he wants to chase around in the D zone and step in front of shots.
Not sure if we'll ever know. I think Ledecky/Malkin want to win. I think that's obvious. If we fail to make the playoffs this year or get bounced in the first round, I don't know how safe Lou's job is. - Isleshockeyman
Do you think this team as presently constructed plus maybe JT Miller is a cup contender?
BD did write here at one point, right? I think he's the one that banned for saying anytime anyone disagrees with him or question him he goes and hides behind EK's leg and gets them banned.

Yeah he did. Total gong show. Then he did a short stint again and we all went to the forums page and stopped posting on his threads

Possibly, yes. Depends on several factors. If Palms steps up, if Lee gets back to form, if JGP and Beau add a few more goals, if the PP starts working, if Bailey hustles (just kidding, we all know he won't), if Nelly another good year or better, then yes, I think this team could be a cup contender. I would still like them to get a pure goal scorer like Tank.
Now, if you want to ask me if they could win the President's trophy. Absolutely not. But if they make the playoffs, I think they could make another deep run.

Just seems a lot has to break right with the current talent. Isles would be a tough out but would have trouble against teams like Tampa and the Canes to name a few.

I think the team is one big player away from making another run. That's why I'm beating this drum! I think the wildcard is whether they can do it without Trotz's structure, but I'll take that chance.
To the point of not going for it all at once if it means sacrificing future runs, I just think that the organization needed to get serious years earlier than it did if it wanted to go that route. They had good players and let them languish for years under Cappy and Weight. The reality is that, by the time competent leadership was brought in, the identity and much of the core was in its 30s, or fast approaching there. At this point, I say you give this group the best chance possible to take one more run at it and then worry about the future.
Nobody circles Comeblowus as a destination. Jarmo made a good pitch with the right money and won though. - Isleshockeyman
Except Columbus didn’t pitch him. JG’s team contacted them and asked if they were interested. They then talked and made a deal. Jarmo said they never even thought they had any chance.

It appears he had relationships with multiple players on Columbus. That plays a role. Would love to know what Lou’s offer actually was but I guess we’ll never know.
That was a brilliant idea by you. One of very few. - nyisles7
That’s when being here was awesome we could do and say whatever we wanted.
As for the islander team I don’t k ow what to think. Making the ECF 2 years in a row was it because of the shorter seasons I don’t know. It’s been pretty much the same team for years in fact pretty much the same since Snow was running the show. Sometimes you need to do something drastic to get over that hump. That being said if Raty makes the team and is a force it could be what we need. Solid on defense solid goaltending and those are the things that win cups

The shortened seasons certainly played a role. As did some luck, which is true in all pro sports.
Buuut the Islanders also dominated long stretches of those shortened seasons. IIRC, they set a couple franchise records as well. Some of that is certainly luck, but it was also the byproduct of being a damned good team.
Now, are they still that good a team? Dunno. But one bad year isn’t enough for me to write off the very real possibility that this core has another run left in it.
