Because they somewhat painted themselves into a corner as far as the cap goes. If not for that, I have no doubt they would have been significantly more competitive in trying to land Gaudreau
- eichiefs9

The first part is known. The “not such a big deal” salaries like Martin and redundant Johnston add up don’t they? Who would’ve thought? No doubt that the extra million here and there coupled with some other contracts are hindering us. I guess playoff point leader Bailey isn’t so easy to trade. Incredible. The second part of your post nobody knows how competitive we were with Gaudreau or really whether we made a real push to begin with. We’re all going on speculation really. Maybe he couldn’t jettisone salary that’s why we lost out or maybe there wasn’t a realistic offer to begin with?

Johnston can be sent to Bridgeport for full cap relief. I'm not sure if he'd clear waivers or not. The whole 4th line is overpaid. I was never in favor of bailing out the Leafs to get Martin, but his contract may be the least damaging of the three.

It's certainly possible. I'm sure Sakic doesn't want to have to eat a bad return for Girard and pay market-price for Kadri. I'm willing to bet they had an internal best-and-final offer for Kadri and if they couldn't get him to sign at or below that then they'd move on.
- eichiefs9

I think they have reached that point with Kadri however they certainly can revisit signing him.

Johnston and Martin aren’t the problem. They make no money it’s the other bad contracts on that roster that make up the problem. If Martin and Johnston weren’t on the team you would have two other players making what they make replacing them so the cap number would still be the same no? It’s not like you can just dump those two and have two less roster spots on the team to save money. Why do I feel like we have this conversation every July/August 🤣🤣

You don’t need two 1-1.5 million face punchers.

Well Tkachuk told Calgary he’s not resigning with them according to Ek

If Lou doesn’t get Tkachuk I think he should be fired immediately.

From an actual credible source:

Matthew Tkachuk has notified the Calgary Flames that he won’t be re-signing with the club, multiple sources tell The Athletic, making a trade of the 24-year-old All-Star forward likely to happen soon.

Tkachuk has not officially asked for a trade, but the fact that the restricted free agent is unwilling to make a long-term commitment to Calgary would be the driving force behind the decision to move him now.

In addition to making the Flames aware that he won’t be re-signing with the organization that picked him at No. 6 in the 2016 NHL Draft, Tkachuk has supplied them with a list of teams with whom he would agree to a long-term contract, according to multiple sources. Tkachuk does have some power over where he might land, given that teams likely won't want to pay as large of a trade price for him as a rental.

One source familiar with Tkachuk’s list said that St. Louis, Vegas, Florida, Nashville and Dallas are options. New Jersey and the New York Rangers are also among the other teams that have expressed interest in the past.

True but what’s the difference the money is still tied up in 12th & 13th forwards whether they punch faces or not. You don’t save money on the cap if he is good at face offs instead of fighting 🖕🤣

Tkachuk reportedly provided the Flames with a list of teams he'd sign a long-term contract with, including the St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, and Dallas Stars.

$1 million or $1.5 million are not an issue.. IF you need room u can waive them and YES they would get picked up if you did waive them.. They do have value in a line up whether u think so or not... Ask Carolina who got pushed around by a bigger team who knocked them out of the playoffs... the Rangers were not the better team in that series.. they were the tougher team. Trouba head hunting all the skill players and Canes having no one to do anything about it was a huge factor in that series.

Having a 4th line with guys that can actually play big minutes are why this team was a short handed goal when those guys WEREN"T on the ice away from a cup final.

YOu want to complain about our salaries? who makes too much on this team? No one is making 10, 11, 12, or 13 mill a year. the ones that are high are movable.

Notice He doesn't have any Canada teams on his list. All these guys who are not from Canada and whose extended family doesn't live in Canada want out... It's a Canadian politics issue to me.. more than a Calgary one.

Do you ever stop with the Cap... EVERY TEAM has to deal with the CAP. The islanders have more cap room than 75% of other teams right now.. they have NO ONE With a cap hit of more than $7 million... What Corner are u talking about?

What politics are you referring to?

Admittedly I’m from an uber rural area of northern Alberta, and have never had need to cross borders. So I’m undoubtably insulated from the issues to which you refer.
