Age aside moving him is a big set back for the kids. Idk if them without JT is a good idea. Torn on the trade or resign question. Comes down to his ask & somebody else would be gone this year or next to fit him into the cap.

Basically you’re allowed to replace your injured player with another of equal value. To maximize the benefit you want to be exactly at the cap, then you can exceed the cap by the amount of the player being put on LTIR.

If the salary cap is $82.5m and your total salary is at $81.0m and a $5m player gets hurt you could trade for a $3.5m player, or you could call up a $1.5m player and trade for a $5m player.

Teams trying to reach the cap floor will trade for guys like Pronger, Zetterberg, Hossa etc because they know they won’t play, and they will be on IR, not LTIR, therefore not on the active player roster (23 man), but counting against the cap.
