Three if the islanders do nothing. But that makes it seem worse because the east as a whole is pretty strong. I'd say they are better than 6 teams in the west potentially.

We aren't in cup contention for the next 2 - 3 years even if we did sign any of these players.
The fastest way to getting yourself into (and staying!) in contention is through rolling your own. We are all set up for this, at least as much as anyone can be.

If you want to criticize them for not spending more money, fine. I don't agree with bringing in some of these vets but I could see how they could taken on another bad contract or two. Then again, they were linked to JVR and he fits that description.

I was listening to the Instigators podcast today, few take aways:

Rivet called Savoie the Wright of the West

Andrews thinks that the two other 1st round picks will be used as currency in the future to round out the team because centers get more in trades and teams always want centers

Neither thought the Sabres were going to sign anyone other than players for Rochester (it was their draft recap before Free Agency)

The one thing they talked about needed for the future was size up front and on the blue line (the accomplished the latter in FA)

They disagreed on staying the course or adding someone in FA.

You dare bring up Colorado? They are the poster child for what we want to be. Four years ago they had the 4th lowest payroll. Fourth freaking lowest. They didn't get good via free agency. They sucked for a decade as well but they had a gm with a plan (and sack).

As of right now I'd say they're in a position to pick up a few more points but similar draft slot.
