I don't think that gets the deal done
Sens have to be willing to give and it's one of Bernard Docker or Thomson. Out of the 2 which ones would you keep (question for all Sens fans) |

I'd be very hesitant about that kind of price for a d-man who will only be there for 3 years, and doesn't naturally play the side you're trying to fill. Objectively, I think they're better off signing Klingberg to a 1yr deal even at >>>$$$. The goal of next year is to take a serious run at a playoff spot, and a lot of that is going to fall on DeBrincat, Giroux, and Talbot to be difference-makers. And even if not the best defensively, bringing in another 50pts D-man like Klingberg will certainly help win some games. Plus, they'd be giving themselves a year's time to assess the development of both Sanderson/Thomson as long-term top-4D, and retain prime trade assets that could make them buyers at the trade deadline.

At this point, if presented with that choice it's got to be Thomson you hold on to... he's just got a broader skill set, and higher potential to be an impactful top-4D. I really like Bernard-Docker, and they will need guys who are more defensive specialists... but he looks like he may not have more than #4/5 upside, and could be at least 2 years away from that. |

I’m pretty sure they won’t want 3 defensemen lol |

This is a huge development in terms of contracting. The team filing for arbitration turns what we expect to happen upside down. My guess is that it starts a process that will result in a trade.

The Flames have filed for club-elected salary arbitration with Matthew Tkachuk. This provides us the opportunity to continue to work with his representatives towards a contractual resolution while removing the possibility of an offer sheet.

Before Dibrincat that might have been an option. Don't think there is any budget calculus that could possibly allow that to happen.
Only possibility would be to trade Norris. |

I agree with you but I have to wonder if Smith will actually play the young D to find out what they are.

Easy. Keep Thomson. It isn't even remotely close. |

It should've happened last year, so now with the team expecting to contend for a playoff spot...like this coach is going to allow for growth/development of the young D!

It truly sucks that they didn't use last year the way they should've when it comes to what you are saying they do this year. |

Based on current 20-man projected rosters these are the youngest teams in the NHL (using average age).

3. Detroit - 26.1
4. New Jersey - 26.1
5. Anaheim - 26.3

Most Goals over past 2 seasons:
1. Auston Matthews - 101
2. Leon Draisaitl - 86
3. Connor McDavid - 77
4. Alexander Ovechkin - 74
5. Kirill Kaprizov - 74
6. Alex DeBrincat - 73
Pretty impressive. Have to think his ask STARTS at 8.5m and will go as high as 9.5m. I think 9m is the most fair number but I would be happy if he's under 9 long term |

Amazing how tight the age gaps are here. Wonder what the oldest end of the spectrum looks like. Imagine Pittsburgh has to be up there. |

Pretty sure management will wait to see how he fits in, how he performs with this team before giving out any longterm deal.

If you scroll down in the link below to the area that says end of season average age, it gives you the average age to end this past season. That's all I could find for now.

Agree on the playoff spot. I would like to get Klingberg IF Zaitsev will be gone. Sanderson will be a huge help on the back end - isn't this why we brought Hamonic in? It's the one move I am curious about because that's $3m right there. Zaitsev is 4.5. With that type of $ we could get a SERIOUS d-man |

I do understand what you are saying with Thomson.... same with Bernard Docker, he will have to be really reliable in his own end and see if the offensive comes (maybe similar to what Tom Preissing was for the Sens with less offense)

That really....REALLY.....REALLLLLLY makes sens after Bobby Ryan got a 50M deal with Sens and then most recently Matt Murray after we got his rights. |

By all accounts Klingberg is a knob.
Wants to run the power play, doesn't hit, too offensive.
If he's not willing to blow his shoulder out for this couch he's not worth having around.
We wouldn't be having this "D" conversation if Thompson had been allowed to mature last year at the NHL level. Now we're left still wondering if he's gonna be good enough. We THINK he is.... |

My concern with Klingberg is that he would be a continuation of the Sens' pattern this summer of stressing skating and skill over size and physicality. I am very happy with Debrincat. Working hard on being happy with Giroux. But both these players are smaller high skill skaters.
In terms of filling out the D, pay the price for the bigger body that plays a physical game when needed. Chychrun has the skill, he is a good skater and he can also play a strong physical game.

If Zaitsev is still around, with Zub and Hamonic, we won't see Thomson or JBD. If they move Zaitsev but bring in this "top 4D" we won't see Thomson or JBD.
If Smith gets clever and pairs Sanderson with the likes of Zaitsev or Hamonic and if Sanderson isn't good enough right off the bat to completely overcome those two then we may not see Sanderson for very long either.
More important than getting rid of Zaitsev or acquiring a "top 4D" is getting rid of Smith. |

I wouldn't lock in the Sens top 6 forwards, I could see this top 9.
Tkachuk Norris Batherson
Debrincat Stützle Joseph
Formy Pinto Giroux
At first glance I did not think this was all that good. But the more you look at it the more you think this is going to be a pretty deep roster.
Also hoping that Grieg finds a way to break into line up. |
