Leafs sign former Sen Adam Gaudette to one year deal, interesting. |

Tampa locking up Sergachev for 8 x $8.5M and Cirelli for 8 x $6.25M is a big deal for them. That is a lot of money they are throwing around. |

Cirelli deal you could live with… but 8.5m for Sergachev? That’s too much. |

I like the Giroux signing and think he's going to help out a lot especially on the dot which will make quite a difference in terms of puck possession. |

I am not so sure Washington is going to like the Kuemper 5 x $5.25 contract in a few years. He is 32 years old. |

8x8 for Thomas? That is absolutely crazy.
Big gamble - Trilla
I think Thomas is worth at least 7m on a long term deal. He is legit. |

This is a quality deal. Not too much on the money or term. Absolute home run. He should be a great mentor for the young kids while still providing offensive punch. - Gord_Wilson_2.0

I'm not endorsing the Burns idea per se, but it's not as far-fetched as some might be thinking. Despite his age, he was one of just 3 NHL D-men to play over 26min/GP last year, is a natural RH shot, and would definitely increase the quality of the team's PP. He's also surprisingly resilient, having played a full 82GP in 6 of the last 8 seasons, while in this 30's.
In terms of dollars, his $3.5M signing bonus is already paid for this year, which leaves just $13M owed for the next 3 years (i.e. ~$4.3M/yr in actual $$$) vs. $8.0M AAV. If the Sharks would take back Zaitsev, it would negate 1/2 the $$$ and 1/2 the AAV for the first two years. The 3rd year would be harder to manage, but the team is obviously focused on getting a much-improved product on the ice in the short-term, as the young core continues to develop.

Is this team, as it stands right now, a playoff team?
They've certainly made some fantastic gains. One more D would make a big difference, but I think this team can compete for a playoff spot as it stands right now. |

You gotta bridge that…everybody this season had a breakout year lol
I’d need to see a bit more from him before giving him that much. |

All the broadcasters are hyping the excitement of all the UFA signings. But TSN just showed a screen comparing the signings this year compared to last year. About half as many in the first two hours of this year compared to last year.
We are in a really tough cap situation for more than half the teams. Not surprised we have half the demand.
Sens need to be patient to add the "one more D" you are talking about. The market will be coming to them. They should be able to get a really good player.

I think they’re in the conversation as a Wild card team.
I’m still weary of the goaltending. That could change with the aquisition of a top 4.
The only other wild card team that could potentially cause us some problems is NJ. |

Happy to see Colin White land in a competitive market. I hope he excels and makes many eat crow.
Meanwhile....that Gudbrandson contract. Ouch |

Looks like I signed a 7 years contract to post in that thread. It's a little weird. Go Sens go, I guess. |

PIT added another RHD in Jan Rutta, which has only added further speculation that Marino will be traded. Would be nice if they had interest in picking up Connor Brown as a cost-controlled winger. |

Penguins Final 2021-22 Report Cards

C+
John Marino, RD
Season mirrored that of his frequent partner, Marcus Pettersson. Faded after a strong start, tallying only eight assists over his final 42 games. Expected to provide offense from the blue line, Marino managed just one goal. At plus-1, his defensive play wasn’t airtight either. Career arc has flattened following a strong rookie season. |

I heard Kevin on the radio yesterday saying White would sign in Florida. White will be with a great coach as I watched a lot of Jets this game this season and he's surrounded by a nice cast. Coaching means everything with young players and White should excel with Maurice. - Kevin Francis

The Eastern Conference will look a lot different next year. Last year, there was a clear top-8 teams, and the difference between 8th & 9th place was an unusually high 16pts. But we've seen very clear improvements among the likes of OTT, DET, NJ, plus a bit of erosion among many of the playoff teams, including BOS, TOR, CAR, TB. If you look at the +/- values, OTT was a -39 last year vs. a +30-+35 for WSH/BOS in the wild card spots, and they were slightly more off the GF pace than the GA.
By that measure, if they can add ~50G more GF and cut ~30G from the GA, they should find themselves right in the thick of things. Adding a 40G-scorer plus a veteran who's had 9x 20G seasons in over 1,000GP goes a long way to generating those extra 50GF... and adding a young D-man like Sanderson plus another top-4D, and stabilizing the goaltending tandem will definitely help keep those 30GA out of the net. Factor in that the points may not come quite so easily for the top-8 teams in the East, and I think there's a very reasonable chance that the Senators will be in contention for one of those wild card spots. |
