Players/agents were permitted to talk to teams after the draft. Sounds to me like he wasn't getting anything much better than what the Pens were offering. - Thunderbolt

He could of gotten more than 6.1 per elsewhere...maybe not for 4 years...maybe, I dont know, but I definitely feel there are teams that would give more than 6.1 per hahah

Maybe it’s time to lay off Ron Hextall a bit. Just signed Letang, Malkin, Rakell and Rust for a combined $22.3 million annually. Way less than anyone could have projected
I’m with Rino … I’m not a big Hextall guy but credit where it’s due, this is great work. - kfinl170
They did a great job on these contracts. My only concern is we still basically have the same team as we have flunked out of the playoffs with for the last 4 years (plus Rackell now).
I think all 3 areas of the team still need to be improved or there needs to be one big move that will give them an overwhelming strength.
1. Forward - I think Zucker is going to have a great, bounce back year but I would love to get a real power forward to play with Geno and Rackell. I do think bringing back Kessel for $2.5M to play on the 3rd line would also make a lot of sense.
2. Defence - Can we ditch one of the Petts/Dumo to build out forward strength or do we make a trade that gives us an upgrade over Marino to compensate. Petry and Dumba are guys that make sense in a trade.
3. Goaltending - I can't believe we would walk back with the same goaltending duo that has failed badly and been the sole cause of us getting knocked out of the playoffs the past 2 seasons. Id like to see DeSmith go and sign Samsonov but not sure how that would all work.

I'm also not as down on Zucker as many here. He could start the season as our 2nd line LW and I wouldn't be mad about it.
Players we should keep an eye on to fill 2 forward spots remaining:
D.Strome (perfect for the 3rd line to work with Carter as a C replacement)
Milano (exciting to see if he can replicate last season form)
Heinen (he did his job with us just fine)
Domi (mngmnt has shown interest before)
Kase (only mentioning him because he'd be dirty cheap if we sign a 2nd line F)
Kapanen (dirty cheap as well)
We will trade Pettersson or Dumoulin. That's my take. |

Music to my ears. Welcome back Geno!
Now it’s time to fill out the rest of the roster. - MaxHyjinx
After signing Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins are currently projected to have $3,383,158 in cap space with 11 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders under contract.
(that includes O'Connor, Zohorna and Joseph)
Roster is basically filled out, barring a salary dump trade
I think a 3rd line forward (Kapanen) and a 12/13 guy around league minimum are in order, but unless there is a salary dump, the roster looks pretty close:
Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Zucker-Geno-Rackell
DOC-Carter-Kapanen?
McGinn-Blueger-Zohorna
Dumo-Letang
Matheson-Marino
Pettersson -Ruhwedel
POJ-Friedman
If they could just dump a 4M defenseman, they could add a pretty good player. |

I like most on your list but Im not as high on Milano and Kase (we don't need more guaranteed injuries). Heinen was awesome last year but he might be priced out for us. Kapanen I think will be back on a cheap one, Strome is probably going to get paid more than we can pay him. I'd add Marchment to your list, he might be that LW I am wanting for Geno.
Pettersson, Dumo, Zucker, McGinn, DeSmith are all guys I could see getting traded in the right deal. I will say though, even though I want to improve the top 4 D, Burke has come out and said they were happy with the D and even if they are overpaid, they were pretty solid this past year. I don't know if they are going to just salary dump any of those guys.

Still no trades by Hextall to free up space. No bueno. |
|
|
|
Hard to believe Dumo was the last throw in piece for the Staal trade considering he has been the most valuable piece for the Penguins... but Im hoping today's his last day as a Penguin. He seems like a guy a team would overpay for and I think Pettersson is a lot more solid than him. I worry a little bit about Letang-Matheson as our top pairing.
If we trade Dumo or Pettersson, that will give us plenty of money to add either an impact player or 2 solid depth pieces. Id target RFAs who didnt get qualified. Give me a high risk/high reward guy or two. |

Heres the thing...While great they got those players signed at the deals they are at, that roster is still pretty weak. Zucker and Malkin are made of glass so who will step up mid season when they are out and carry teh team? Carter is 1 yr older slower. The top 6 is ok if healthy but that bottom 6 blows. THey need a RW to bump Zucker to the 3rd.

Trade petts/dumo in a cap dump to open space a a 2LW and resign Kap.

I know guys are down on Carter, but zucker and kap as 3rd line wingers is fine by me. Should leave $4M-$5M for that 2LW |

It’s because he refuses to add incentives to take players. I get it, it’s not a good thing to do, but sometimes you have to do what’s necessary.

Only way to do that is to trade dumo or Petts. Doesn’t seem like that’s happening right now so pens may be bargain shopping |

I didn't mean the team to a man, I meant in structure and impact.
Kessel = Rackell > talented offensive winger.
Hornquist = Zucker > undersized gritty and highly paid winger.
Murray = Jarry > unreliable goaltending.
Schultz = Marino > a decent but soft 2nd pair RD - Marino +D -O
McCann = Heinen
Bjugstad = Carter > an aging vet 3C.
Maata = Dumo of this year... no legs left.
The only difference in the team really is that we have Matheson in the top 4 D instead of what was the better, shutdown version of Dumo. Then we have Sid, Geno, Letang, Jake, Rust & Pettersson who are playing at a very similar level to back then with the exception of Pettersson being a bit better and Geno slowing down a bit.
My point was more about the formula being the same.
