How do fans rally behind a team with no direction. The returning players are not enough to compete with the top teams as currently constructed.

Here is the issue. The credit was there for the taking. I think the reasons you gave for why a player might sign somewhere made sense. Other sources corroborated it. However where you went wrong was calling it for more than it was. Such as Gaudreau was a done deal for the Flyers. You did not have that information and you know it. He wanted to play for Philly. His wife wanted to stay here but it was not a done deal.
