Not a powerhouse at all. Chiarot contract is 2nd worst of UFA after only Gudbranson. |

NHL GMs are such morons at UFA that I think an owner restricting his GM to 2 year max UFA contracts would actually benefit most organizations. In two years or less, over half the 3+ year UFA signings will be bad. |

I was not a fan of the Chariot signing....then I thought back to his only very good pairing with Shea Weber. Could Stevie be thinking of repeating that sucess and he would be very good with Seider as a partner? Then Seider makes everyone better!

wings also have two impact rookies potentially on the team.
Edvinsson (who they are excited as they were for Seider).
Bergrren- had a great rookie season in the AHL |

Sweeney get his hands on a time machine? |
|
|
|
How about an actual analysis. Since Yzerman took over he has deliberately signed guys to short term deals, just to fill spots, giving time for some of his youth to develop. Made sense. The added benefit is some of these guys on 1-year at-a-time deals can be sold at the deadline for a few extra picks. Again, makes sense.
The result is Detroit has a ton of cap space and needs to sign more players to actually form an NHL roster.
So what happened this week wasn't some big surprise or change in strategy. He brought in a few more veterans to provide some leadership and stability. In this case, instead of a bunch of 1-2 year deals, he identified a couple of guys like Copp and Chiarot that he wants to stick around a bit longer.
There is nothing amazing that took place. So how about an actual recap:
-traded Stecher, Leddy, and Namestnikov at the deadline. As we all expected.
-walked away from Gagner, Staal, Dekeyser, Greiss. Again, as expected.
-brings in Copp, Perron, Kubalik, Chiarot, Maatta, Husso
The team is slowly getting better. But nothing extraordinary going on.
