I'm surprised it was MTL. Are they not trying to rebuild? Why not just keep Petry?

Also, good, I'm glad. Anderson is a TERRIBLE contract for a guy got overpaid for one good season. If the other forward was Hoffman or Gallagher, then double good. There really isn't a single forward that MTL would be willing to part with that I'd want in return for Marino or any dman for that matter.

I am curious what caused the deal to fall through though.

There is literally nothing I would consider in a win from mtl.

I agree. I wonder if them not being able to trade Petry had something to do with it? Or maybe Zucker was involved, but Zucker wouldn't waiver his NTC. I mean overall I wouldn't mind seeing what Anderson could do next to Malkin. Maybe a Rust- Malkin and Anderson line would be good, but I agree on his contract it is horrible.

Caufield would be the only interest of mine and there's zero chance they'd trade him.

Anderson COULD be a great get for the Pens. He definitely fits the mold of a big physical power forward who can score, but he's very inconsistent and gets injured a lot. He's kind of in Lupul territory, but that contract is so bad it's not worth trying it out.

Guessing Ty Smith is on a two way deal... cause trading a D for D seems odd

It’s a weird one but idk about horrible. He’s a year removed from being one of the top D prospects in the league and had 23 points in 48 games in rookie year. That said he was terrible last year. Not saying I like the move but he isn’t a scrub

It's definitely not the value everyone had on Marino and it definitely wasn't the JT Miller or Garland trade we were hoping for. It does put us in an interesting spot with a top prospect and 3rd round pick. Plus some cap space to sign a player or 2. Unless Hex wants to also make another trade and swing for the fences with someone like Klingberg.

Why? Marino played 81 games last year and has one goal and 25 points! Smith had 5 and 20. He's not worth $4.4 for the next 5 years! Not sure what you were expecting back.

I imagine it wasn't the trade Hex was expecting either... I think he had a GM or two pull out of deals Hex thought would go through this past week. For another D man to an interdivisional rival is some stupid BS IMO Hahaha

Maybe now they can move Petts + to Van for Garland, they opened up $3.5 mil in cap space with this move

I think the opposite. Ty Smith is a great prospect from NJ. They are expecting big things from him. He was injured one year ago season. He can move the puck and he has potential to be a great PP guy. He is a smaller offensive defenseman who has potential to be solid. Plus a 3rd round pick. We got a solid young player and 3rd round pick also cap space.

Marshall says the staff was very frustrated by his lack of O, questions whether he is the next coming of Maatta in that impresses early, gets extended, then becomes meh … which is a scenario I can see but one that needs to happen to justify this move

I know he's promising and I like having young cheap blood like that around. I also like the cap space... If used well.. We shall see on that one. Production stats similar aside, Marino is a better defender and is a righty. Now the right side concerns me with what's currently there.

Hate to lose Marino but this trade wasn’t horrible as some people are painting. Ty Smith is like 21yo and has a good future ahead. He’ll learn from Letang, no doubt. We also managed to get a 3rd RP.

He is not the biggest, 5'11" and 180 and was scratched for a few games last yr. May not take long for him to be in Sullivan's doghouse since is defensive game is lacking. But he is only 22, has time for his game to mature!

If this trade was for Pettersson or Dumoulin I’d be feeling a little better…but it’s not like it’s a horrible trade asset wise.
