No impact. He's only 24, but has 6 full seasons in the NHL. He'd be UFA next summer. - Lunaion
Ahh, makes more sense now. Thanks...and never mind about the above post.

I am failing to see the logic in the team taking him to Arb.
I know they get another year to try to negotiate a contract, but If UFA status is the result, why would he sign then and not now? Maybe they can work a trade over the next year? That would seem to ve high risk for the acquiring team.
I'm not following. - IonSabres
They didn't want him to accept his QO because then he would be locked into that contract and teams wouldn't be trading for his RFA rights, they'd be trading for a $9m pending UFA. So this buys them some time to either work out a long term deal or find a trade partner before a deal kicks in

The mythical, never to happen trade would be for a long term extended Tkachuk. - kingcong39
I'll pass...he would get in the way of Skinner |

Right, they just bought a little time. If it actually gets to a hearing, they lose. |

We were clearly a Copp and Marchment away from winning a cup next year Ion, get with the program.

Johan Larson actually liked buffalo but was mad when Adams didn’t want to resign him last summer. Basically he wasn’t in there plans
So unless that changed. I doubt he’s coming |

I’m not disagreeing with you, but at the same time I’m not losing sleep about picking top 10 again this year and still having salary cap flexibility next offseason.
There is no scenario that Buffalo is a legitimate contender next year, zip.
Would it be nice to break the drought ? Absolutely.
Would be cool to win a Stanley Cup too and if that takes another top 10 pick and another year of patience, so be it |

I’d imagine his discounted trade return will likely be better for Calgary vs the 2 1st a 2nd and a 3rd he would bring back on an offer sheet. |

What stops them from doing that next year, even our young guys are known production instead of question marks still. This isn’t a cup team this year. Who cares if we are 4 wins better this year over doing it next year |

just 1 more year of a top 10 pick
year after year

Count me in the minor group...maybe we have 2 30 goal scorers on ELC's coming our way, saving ~$9m that then could be spent on a Tkachuck or similar next season. That's a win/win/win scenario.
Last year at this time, nobody except Rat knew who Marchment was...even then I did not hear him boasting about him likely to pot 20 pts let alone nearly 50 |

So Andrew Copp was going to solve that?? If we are worse this year it means our young guys aren’t what we hoped, which means we shouldn’t be wasting assets by trading for or signing fringe players |

Well said. I don't get the constant desire to draw conclusions on people. It isn't like Mitts is similar to Nylander, a guy who never ever ever showed a thing. Would it surprise anyone if Mitts put it all together? - Slump Buster

He never said that, he said he could have helped with that. And if the young guys get worse which would not be a good thing, just means the cycle repeats itself because now we wait to see if the next set of prospects are the one's. |

copp makes this team closer to a playoff team, as well as a cup team
today, next year, and the following 4 years after that
just rename them the loserville sabres if there is no desire to try to ice a team against tampa, florida, leafs and a bruin team

Could it be that this roster, as it stands right now could end up being a better team, with players improving; yet they finish about the same?
Seems to me several Eastern teams have made some nice adjustments |
