Sure a guy that's been in the Selke voting 3yrs in a row, who's offense has gone up 2yrs in a row against a player that can't break 19pts, can't stay healthy and barely plays 13min a night.

Moving on.....

It's a matter of contract , team structure and team continuity.

We will need to sign both 1 OA defenseman soon
Our 1C MACHINE

Giving an outsider that kinda $, just isnt part of our team structure.

Draft
Sign those that we drafted
Add cheap free agents

Pay someone that makes a splash, like pk88.

At least it would drive interest in the team and maybe our budget team would spend again. The revenue is understandably important to this franchise.

You get this , right?

I am right there with you. So much to watch, so many questions. Exciting style of play and a coach who can extract the growth from young players and production from older players.

The doom and gloom team is out to lunch.

If Patrick Kane were not from Buffalo there would be zero interest in signing a 34 YO winger to a high priced contract.

I thought we needed vet scorers?

if Copp, Johnny Hockey and Debrincat don't fit the timeline, would be too expensive and would block the prospects, the same can be said about Kane.

Personally, I was not opposed to bringing in a vet or two, if the price is right. I really wanted a vet D (Lybushkin wasn't my first or even fifth choice), and would have been OK with a Niederreiter (over Vinny).

Clearly, I'm in the "patience, build from within" crowd, but you need vets around to show these kids the way (Okposo, Anderson, Girgs are all fine, but I would not have been opposed to one or two more).

I wouldn't, however, give up the assets needed to acquire Kane (last year on his deal, rumor is he wants to play for a ready made contender) if he can just walk at the end of the year or is traded at the TDL (so in essence, we traded two of Quinn, Peterka, Power,, Sammy, Savoie, etc plus two first round picks, etc etc for, what? 60 games of him?). Not worth it, imo.

On the flip side, he is from Buffalo.

Honestly the "team timeline" does kick off next year IMO of course. This year will be a see how ya got kinda year (yes, I'm well aware we all wanted that to be last year, but let's be real, it took half a season to clear the Kruger stank off this team). If we get: Tage being a 30/35 65 point center who shows progress at the all around center aspects, Skinner playing at least to his moderate pace (25 G), Tuch still being Tuch (most likely of these 3 happening), VO getting a fully healthy year, with Cozens and Krebs growth, who knows what can happen. Not calling playoffs, but moving out of the laughing stock portion of this league is something I think we all could be ok with to vary degrees. Add in the next wave of kids and Kane the following year Buffalo could start to make some noise.

Buffalo could show signs of ready made playoffs throughout the year. Could entice him on a deal after next season.

Copp was paid market value but I don't think the type of player he is, is something the Sabres need, I believe Cozens will be him if not better

Johnny Hockey the Sabres aren't going to give him the 7 year term and contract at this point in time

DeBrincat not only cost assets to give you have to pay him $10 million on his next contract, see Johnny Hockey there

Kane isn't getting a 7 year deal, isn't getting anything longer than a 3-4 year deal (at most), is from Buffalo and won't prevent the Sabres in the long run from paying Power after his bridge deal expires (I believe that's the route they are going to go because not only would they have cap space opening from Skinner's contract coming off the books, if they were to sign Kane his would be coming off as well)

For saying fans only worry about the cap is flat out wrong. I've been listening to the Instigators podcast, and there have a lot of things to say about long term cap viability in Buffalo and several times they mentioned as much as they would have liked the Sabres to be more active in free agency this year, they understand what Kevyn Adams is doing and they know the Sabres are going to be shelling out some serious money in the next 18 months...

Kane if traded during the season will get a
protected first
Good prospect
maybe another pick.

and Chicago will have to take on cap dumps.

Kyrou is a stud for sure, but an aging Krug is probably why they said no, if they're giving up Tkachuk they'll want another young piece.

Plus does Krug waive to go to Calgary?

Kyrou is a great start though.

It all depends on what Kane wants to do.

If he says I am only waiving to go to Colorado then Chicago gets a 1st and a cap dump to make it work, and maybe another pick but they're not going to be able to really strike it big on his trade.

I think Olofsson would get a similar return in a trade because of the lack of a NMC.
