yes i know some of the debates a while ago sorta screamed about trading everyone for veterans but I think a majority here were in favor of making a smart trade or two using picks

There's certainly no rule. But other than (questionably) the Blues, all of these teams in the cap era have won because of their drafted core.

Chicago. LA. Pittburgh. Tampa. Washington. Bruins. Red Wings. Ducks.

Their draft picks were their best players. And all of them had complimentary trades/free agents assisting that core.

And yet they wouldn't have done it had they not had a franchise defenseman/center, that they drafted.

I am not arguing the merits of trades, nor the merits of FA.

But in every single one of these situations, you draft first, trade complimentary for complimentary, and fill out the rest with FAs.

That is why I wanted savoie. We need more elite talent. On defense, with Dahlin and power. We are fine.
