Current borders don't really tell us where the Vikings were. What is now Finland and north western Russia also had these people as well before they expanded west.

I believe DNA research has these people's ancient origins from what is now northern Iran long before the Norse culture was established. Just another branch of Aryans... branches that are so many that it boggles the mind.
