He doesn't have to be a rental. There are options that he is, and ones he's not. - mventres
obviously he doesn't have to be, but again, how often do sign and trades happen in the NHL? essentially NEVER. this isn't the NBA dude. it's extremely unlikely Tkachuk is a sign and trade. making him....a rental |

What makes this so tough is if the kid wants to be in a particular city (St. Louis) then all they (St. Louis) need to do is wait one year and he will be a UFA. So what CGY hopes to get and what they will get I don't know. Maybe some high end prospects/draft picks possibly? Is St. Louis waiting for the arbitration ruling to help them be a guide for their salary parameters? No doubt CGY is in a tough spot. - Hockeyfan39
I’m sure Philly / Nj thought the same about Gaudreau and he surprised everyone and went to cbj |

Ok from a flames fans perception, with JG I personally think he wanted peace and quiet for his family he has that in columbus who might turn out to be a good team anyway. As for matty does he stay does he go, its hard to say you need a team with cap space to take him and sign him the flames will be aiming for 2 firsts and a prospect for sure or a top 5 unprotected how he came to Calgary was just truly dumb luck anyway he was supposed to be drafted by Columbus they dropped the ball. With real luck they keep him slap the 'c' on him and trade for someone to back him up or sign one of the FA on the market Kadri might still be in the works which surely is not JG but he might have to do going forward, I find it hard to believe the flames are going to pass on Matty's prime year without getting serious draft return for him |

Ottawa received 2 1sts & 2 prospects for Duchene, and today they have nothing to show for. It's not that big of a deal.

Step 1 - Pittsburgh offer sheets Mangiapane
Step 2 - Flames sign Kessel to replace some lost scoring
Step 3 - Malkin quietly demands a trade to Calgary to play with Kessel and be a MAN.
Step 4 - Pittburgh trades Malkin and Mangiapane for Tkachuk
Step 5 - Flames new first line is Kessel-Malkin-Mangiapane - Cooleus
Evgeni Malkin or Dennis Malgin? Malkin wants to be THE man, not just a man. |

Dude Tkachuk has already said he's NOT resigning with Calgary. Lower your expectations. You're selling a ONE year UFA player. Not some 8 year locked up gem. |

DUDE the proposal was contingent on an extension being worked out with the acquiring team so assume its a long term extension... the price is very reasonable IMO.

I think you're the one that's off, try offering some comparables or your own trade suggestion. |

Yup. I see two No. 1 draft picks to start with, especially from any team predicted to NOT finish with a top 5 pick in 2023. A couple late 20th something picks in '23 and '24 that are not even guaranteed to make it out of the AHL for a couple more years isn't going to get it done. Meaning: Current top contending teams need not apply. No offence, but they probably don't want your future Owen Pickerings and Isaac Howards.
Most teams are also going to have to find room for what will soon be a huge contract for MT, which also narrows down the candidates because that probably will require them dumping a sizeable contract back on the Flames, which would mean even more picks or prospects going to Calgary to compensate.
It's going to be spensive. |

for a 1 year rental, you're MAYBE looking at a 1st, a 2nd and a B prospect. why tf would any team pay more for a guy they can just sign in free agency next summer and give you NOTHING? |

Matthew is going to inform other teams than his home town St. Louis, he will not sign an extension, and the be a UFA and sign with the Blues. Matthew and Brady have joked about all this, everyone knows that he wants to come home and sign with the Blues for 8 years and as much as $10M per. Matthew and Robert Thomas both believe that will be the second coming of Hull & Oates from the 90's and the fans cannot wait! |

This is correct however its with the team Matty wants to go to. Which means if hes traded to a team he doesnt want to go to he wont sign a long term deal. So Matty and the acquiring team have the leverage.

Posted this on the Sens Forum last night when Eric Francis was on Tim and Friends:
There are only a few scenarios where Matthew comes to Ottawa:
1 - he wants to come to Ottawa
2 - he agrees to a long term deal before any trade
3 - such a deal will be exactly $19 more OR less than the deal Brady just signed ( I will let the brothers figure out seniority vs captaincy)
But if he truly wants to be in the states he ain't coming to Ottawa. And I very much doubt he signs the deal i laid out in #3 or agrees to less money than Chabots deal. And he wants 9.5 million at least
If...and huge IF...he agrees to the first three conditions I just laid out the ONLY deal that makes sense for both teams is some deal involing either Debrinicat or Forementon. And if I'm Calgary I insist on Grieg being a part of the deal
So either Debrinicat and Grieg for Matthew. Or Formenton, Brannstrom, Grieg and JBD/1st rd.
And Ottawa would still need a RD after all is said and done.
Tempting. Very tempting. But they both do the same thing IMO and Matthew would cost too much.
Spend the draft capital on Weegar instead.

Obviously teams are going to ask to talk contract extension with Tkachuk first before making a trade. If he isn't interested then most teams wouldn't bother to trade for him. It's in the Flames best interest to allow teams to negotiate a new deal with Tkachuk since they will get more for him signed than as a rental. We don't really know where Tkachuk will or won't sign (aside from Calgary) so there might be multiple teams that Tkachuk is willing to sign an extension with.
I see a lot of Blues fans that seem to think it's a done deal that Tkachuk will end up in St Louis as a UFA and they don't need to trade for him (they also thought Brady was going to end up there before he signed long term with Ottawa) but if he gets traded i think it will be with a contract extension so if the Blues don't trade for him, they might not get him at all.
For the record as a Wings fan, i'm not interested in Tkachuk going to the Wings. I don't think he will be worth whatever the long term contract is he signs to go along with whatever price the team has to pay to trade for him. |
