Crazy how the wings won cups without a 104+ point superstar.
Tkachuk is overrated af and Calgary his little leverage here. |

I don't think that some of you know what is probably really happening with Tkachuk's situation right now.
By taking him to arbitration, the Flames essentially bought themselves more time to try to negotiate a long term agreement with Chucky. They now have until the date of his arbitration hearing (not yet announced, but will be sometime between July 27 and Aug 11) to negotiate a deal. If Chucky will not agree to a long term agreement by then, the Flames will trade him before the hearing and will get as much as they possibly can, with the team receiving him knowing that he is a UFA at the end of this upcoming season and he may be set on signing with St. Louis (or not - see Johnny Gaudreau). The Flames will NOT allow this to go to arbitration, because if they do they will only have Chucky until the end of the season and he becomes a UFA then and he walks for nothing, and they will not allow that to happen 2 years in a row. IF (and they won't) they did go to the arbitrator hearing, whatever the settlement was - the Flames could not trade him for a year - by that time he is a UFA. One of 2 things will happen by August 11 - option 1 is preferred by the Flames:
(1) Tkachuk signs a long term contract with the Flames - money will not be a problem - he will likely get the most from the Flames. Term is the issue - Flames want commitment long tern - who knows what Chucky wants.
(2) Tkachuk is traded by August 11 at the latest, but traded before his arb hearing takes place. Slight possibility of a "Sign and Trade"(long term) situation to make everything work easier, particularly if St. Louis is the trading partner.
The Blues would be playing a dangerous game if they operate on the assumption that they will just wait until UFA in one year and get him for nothing except $ - ask Philly or the Devils how that theory worked for them with Gaudreau - hags11 (1)The Flames are not going to sign Tkachuk, he already to them he will not sign. (2) The Canadian teams can forget about trading for him, he wants to go to the USA because of taxes he would have to pay. (3) He will not accept a trade to any team with out a maxed out signed contract, 8 Years and Minimum $10M, he will not be a UFA after next season, why take a chance on getting injured and losing money. He wants to go home to St. Louis and do the sequel of Hull & Oates with Robert Thomas who just signed a 8 year / $8M contract that starts in 23-24 season, plus he knows being home and doing the sequel will join Hull with a statue outside Enterprise Center!

3 way trade:
Montreal Canadian Receive:
- Pierre-Luc Dubois
- Winnipeg 3rd
(They get the player they really want, and can sign to their own terms)
Winnipeg Jets receive:
- Matthew Tkachuk
(Dad played for the Jets, hard nosed player)
Calgary Flames receive:
- Kirby Dach
- Kaiden Guhle
- Winnipeg 2nd
- Montreal 2nd + 6th
(Kick starts a rebuild/re-tool they’re not ready to commit to, but essentially needs to start right now)
Each team giving up something they don’t want to, but may have to in order to get what they want in return. That’s how hockey trades should work. - Burnt_juice Don't hold your breath, Matthew gave the Flames 5 teams he would go to and none of them are Canadian teams!

Who said anything about cups...you scoffed at people calling him a superstar when a Wings player hasn't had a point total like that since the mid 90s
Calgary has plenty of leverage...and you are proving my point by saying he is overrated af.
104 points is likely the best season he will ever have...he is gonna cash in on the 8 year deal before he puts up 80 or whatever this coming season. Also injuries ect. He will sign for 8 wherever they trade him. These 5 or 6 teams get one shot at it and he is gone for his prime...make your best offer. |

82 point career high center with a broken neck signed for 4 years
104 point winger totally healthy, 24 years old, signed for 8 years

He’s not a superstar.
He also had to drink out of the faucet growing up because his family doesn’t have any cups. |

Lmao...so true....there is a comment on here about returning to St Louis so he can get a statue next to Hull... little premature... |

Yup. That list “included” the 5 US teams, and it was released after my proposal was already up. But it seemed fair to all 3 teams. |

I like Tkachuk. I like a big body that plays a physical game.
Sutter loves big guys who play a physical game. Calgary was a perfect match for Tkachuk's skill set.
But, Tkachuk is not a good technical skater and struggles with his foot speed. He is in his prime right now and he is smart to cash in. He has several good years left but his game and production will decline rapidly at or before age 28. If you are looking for a model in terms of aging think Mark Stone. However Tkachuk's defensive game is weaker than Stone's and he may fall off even faster.
In a few years we may come to see Calgary as having been the big winner of a trade they did not even want. |
