JJ was just straight up terrible, Rutta isn't that bad but we just didn't need him. All I'm gonna say is Kap better have the season he had in 18-19.

I read a lot of mixed things from hockey guys on Rutta. Some people are underwhelmed and some think we got a steal.

But yes, he was completely unnecessary.

So much for the myth that Hex plays hardball. He's just a moron. Why not go to arbitration? I could have won that hearing.

Walk in there with 3 pieces of paper...one with Kap's stats including the 4 goals in his final 56 games in bold plus the list of line demotions and benchings, and the amount of time spent playing with Geno.
The second simply the production we got from Boyle for 800K on the 4th line.
And third, the very lengthy list of wingers with similar production that have already signed for under 2 million(mainly 1 year prove it deals)...all of whom were not forced into 2nd line duty with a center the likes of Malkin most of the season.

FFS what exactly do they see that most of us don't?????

- Pags

They still see a shiny 1st round pick label on Kap

If we had not signed Rutta and not qualified or traded Kapanen’s rights (both completely in our power to do) w would have close to $6 mil in space. If we had done that and managed to trade an LD for cap space like we did with Marino we would have had near $10 mil in space and been poised to do some serious overhaul to our supporting cast. The core is all on good to great contracts. The aged core isn’t what’s holding us back from building a good roster.

100 percent this and the fact that its so self inflicted makes it all the more frustrating.

Took us 9 days, but finally we claimed back the title of worst signing of FA. Insane Hextall didn't bring this down to arbitration.

Paul Martin was probably the next biggest FA we got after Gonch. Michalek maybe? After that I feel like the most excited I’ve gotten for a free agent in the past X amount of years is Eric Fehr because he seemed like the best bottom 6 UFA center available and I desperately wanted to be done with Sutter. Then funny enough he wasn’t even the guy that replaced Sutter and was very meh all around here.

Honestly, not that I think ANY are worth the price, but I'd rather spend $3.2M on ERod or Heinen than Kapanen.

Yeah I said that earlier too. No doubt.

Gonchar by far - Sykora and Fedotenko were ok and Cullen a nice story, (before Sid/Geno age) Straka and Trottier... so basically one every decade.

Our forward group has less depth and worse than what we finished last season but the defense is marginally better. Our stars are a year older and all past their prime, still performing at a high level but still old for NHL players. We officially have the oldest team with avg age of 30... I had high hopes for the off season but these crappy signings for kappy, ruttu, smith, etc...wasted a lot of precious cap space...

I never said Palffy was the best but he certainly was a GREAT signing. Too bad he balked to Europe. I was a big fan before he even signed with us.

How come Ty Smith was a crappy acquisition? I have high hopes for the guys tbh.

It’s Rutta guys. Not Ruuta, Ruuttu or whatever lol

He wrote about signings... Casey Smith, and here we have to wonder - who else? Pens have a few G prospects, but seems too early for them.

Oh DeSmith. Got it. Whatever happened to Lindgren and D’Orio. I thought they were supposed to be able to get a chance with us. Unlikely now.

Kovalev’s game was a thing of beauty. Hard to think we couldn’t do well with him, Jagr, Lemieux, Straka, Lang and Morozov together. I guess that’s all we had though lol Slegr on D, K.Hatcher? Kasparaitis? That’s about it

Poor Robert Lang. Dude let a young Hudler move into his house and was a mentor to him and Hudler repaid him by banging his wife.

Pens/Kostopoulos were impressed by Joel Blomqvist at dev camp. Lindgren still injured (severe ankle), and we have Taylor Gauthier, Tommy Nappier and recently drafted Sergei Murashov in the pipeline. D’Orio didn't get a QO.
