He is good, a neighbor of pegs and a favorite of pegs, but is going to be a 3rd line LHD?? - turbo044
Definitely not a position of need
And cost would hurt

Well school starts pretty soon, Son leaves on August 14th so I would think it would be soon. |

did the guy claim to be a long time season ticket holder? - homiedclown
Ha, that's about the only thing that was missing. That's the other funny part of the story - he wasn't even a fan of the team. They cut him up pretty good for being a dbag.

I still think there is a 50% shot to sign him in April so I hang on to him. I am open to moving Portillo at any time as he is surely gone.

He still could sign
I would say the door is open but no feet out of the door
Why show up for prospect camp if he is not thinking 9f signing

As others have pointed out, many of the college kids showed up to camps only to leave later on. It seemed as though the consensus was that he wants to both sign and go back to college for another year.

If I had very little intention of signing somewhere I would have said the exact same things that Portillo said - he said he was "open to signing" and that we would just have to see how it plays out. From what I had read, most people were really surprised that Johnson was as forthcoming as he was. He said he wanted to both sign and go back to college for the year. It could all be a smokescreen but I think most people were surprised by him as I think we had both of them leaving next summer.

Sounded to me like Johnson wants to sign, so I see his signing here to be much stronger than 50/50...maybe 85/15.
Portillo is more difficult to gage, I agree. Maybe I'm just feeling more optimistic than some, so I'm going 50/50 on him myself. I don't agree that he is surely gone yet. Especially if UPL struggles, maybe Portillo then sees a better path forward...if that us a current concern if his.
You could turn out to be 100% on the mark and me be completely wrong. We shall see. |

Portillo had a golden opportunity to sign after 2 successful years in college before the Sabres signed Subban and Comrie, and he still chose not to come aboard. He almost certainly would have seen some NHL time this season. He gone. |

I wonder what they would have done. Would they really work in reverse, and signing him forces UPL into the NHL? Would he backup UPL in Roch? Cincy? Can see why he wouldn't like 2/3 of those options.

I think they would have gone with Portillo in the A while the winner of UPL and Subban goes to the show alongside Anderson, while the loser joins Portillo in Rochester. Inevitable injuries give a shot to both Portillo and UPL.
Murray was plan B
Comrie was plan C. They may have backed themselves into a good Comrie idea totally by accident |

I think Comrie was plan A all along. They planned to trade for Murray and waive him to the A. Murray said no thanks so it looks a little weird but everything happend according to plan. |

Maybe. I was at playoff game one of Belleville Vs. Roch when Subban was there with Meatballs and Cozens. I think they always intended Subban to mentor UPL or Portillo there. The Murray idea would have been a great get for them to pair with Anderson while taking the pressure off UPL - and that came after Portillo decided not to sign. I guess we'll never know |

You might be right, it's just all so backwards. Their focus is clearly Levi.
I don't think Subban is a factor in any of this. He's just a depth guy who was willing to take a 2-way deal, and we know he wasn't their first choice. |
