All this is true, but you seem to be forgetting the Flames also got Weegar, a decent prospect, and a first round pick.
A signed Tkachuk is worth a signed Huberdeau and maybe a first. - Squeaky
If Hubie signs its a great trade. But if he doesn't re-sign he isn't going to get a return as good as Kyrou+ or the 2022 2nd overall pick that they may have turned down. |

Who knows how real those trades were. Even if he doesn't sign, he gives them a great shot to go for it this year. If they have a great year and only Weegar extends, they still come out massively ahead.
There are a bunch of different scenarios in which the Flames win this trade. The only way they lose if they're solidly in third in the Pacific at the trade deadline and lose quietly in round one. |

The cap escrow claw back has killed the UFA market. Gaudreau went to Columbus because multiple suspects simply backed away from making big time offers. The majority of teams have now seen the future and they know that teams cannot achieve long term playoff success if they lock themselves into John Tavares type retirement contracts.
Two weeks and Kadri still has not signed a deal. Klingman camp sending out signals that he is open to signing a shorter deal. Next summer there will be even less teams with money for UFA signings. Agents know exactly what has happened.
All the big money is going to players who are 24 and younger. Calgary will sign Huberdeau to less money and significantly less term than what Columbus gave Gaudreau.

I'm a Panther fan and I can tell you Huberdeau is slow on his feet and doesn't like to forecheck or backcheck. He also will not shoot the puck. His across-ice passes leave you infuriated as they usually get picked off. |

The Flames have a glut of d-men now and need a scoring forward. Maybe Weegar gets flipped to the Sens for Formenton + pick??? The Sens were rumored to want Weegar, and this puts the pressure on Ottawa to re-sign him. |

Credit to Zito for getting this done, he’s a old fashion Hockey (horse) trader.
the players also make out on this;
- Tkachuk gets his pay day in a state without income tax, and plays on a team with an offense that plays a little more wide open.
- Huber & Weeger can walk next year if there not happy about this or who’s to say they won’t get moved real soon?
- Flames just got some asset’s to deal if necessary. |

If Calgary resigns then then they win. Huberdeau is best player in the trade. |

If Huberdog chokes Flames 🔥 will get a bad return. If they have to unload him before the trade deadline. |

Excellent return for the flames. They’re better just getting rid of Tkachuk. If they can re-sign or flip Huberdeau and Weegar they’re way ahead.
Florida going backwards this season. |

This is a huge trade for both. I believe it leans towards Calgary. Should Huberdeau and Weegar resign, then its even better for Calgary. Calgary can always flip the 2 players for more assets which also helps. Lets not forget the 1st round pick they acquired. Calgary got more than I expected so well done. Florida saved some money with the extension and does get a younger player. But Huberdeau and Tkachuk are different players. I think Huberdeau was more valuable. Have to give Treliving credit here. 24 hours ago, he had 2 massive holes to fill. Now, we have some sense of direction. Should he say get Kadri, then Calgary will be fine. Otherwise, more work needs to be done. Fun to see a blockbuster trade like this though.
More dead money coming off the books next season. Calgary can load up.
Huberdeau - $9.25m x5
Weegar - $7.25m x 8
Kadri - $7.25m x 5

which will benefit Calgary even more as that 1st round pick improves position

Zito did something we just aren't used too. He made a trade before his upcoming UFA's go public with the current rhetoric "I'm not staying, I'm signing somewhere else to get the most money I can". Zito didn't allow the upcoming UFA's to hold all the cards and destroy their trade values. He beat them to the punch!
Good job by Zito.
Even if it appears "player wise" that he lost in this trade, from a "Team Management" standpoint, he's the winner.
As for Treliving, Awesome deal for him. He needed a break after all he's been through recently, and I think we're all happy for him today.
Overall, a great hockey trade that made so much sense for both sides. |

Weegar is a very good player and still in his prime. Along with the add ins, Treliving did very well in this trade. Tkachuk needs to be a PPG player to be worth the acquisition cost and contract. |

Well said. I was just arguing with Leaf fans about not letting players dictate the levage in UFA. |

If the flames keep any of these players at all even the first rounder its a good deal for them. I am very sad to see Matty go but if thats what he wants so be it I personally like him and will only see him on the ice now twice a year against the flames so that worked out well as well.
The flames just have to limp through this season, probably make the playoffs anyway and not trade any picks away and see what happens if they can sign said players during the season the 5-6 year range would be good |

We still pay federal income tax here in Florida but no state tax. So he's still paying 37%. Compared to 48% from federal and Albert's taxes that's not bad. |

They also pay tax where the games are played. So only half their games are played at home and the rest in the road. Evens out even more. |

Well, with all of those guys they were complete dog poop last year. If you keep Debrincat, and sign Strome (mistake), and Kubalik (another mistake) and try to fill in the holes around them you will continue to get the same dog poop.
They ripped off the band-aid. They will be very bad for a few years and hopefully their prospects start to pan out. |

Capitalism at its finest... more power to Tkachuk to cash in on what will be his best year, plenty of thanks to his linemates.... he got paid, overpaid..... |
