Matthew plays D and is physical... things John doesn't bring to the table.

This trade was all with an eye to the future. Weegar (28) was/is going to want a big raise w/term, and we just saw what Hubie got starting when he’s 30. Plus, he still has Bob’s contract to work around. Zito could’ve re-signed them and kept the boys together, but he wouldn’t have been able to do much else to improve the team. They showed in the playoffs that they’re not close enough to go that route.
Hubie/Weegar current deals equal Tkachuk’s new contract, now Zito has all of the space that opens up next summer to make additions to the roster.
