My default perspective on roster moves is that any given GM will take the path of least resistance on who makes the team. If a player is waiver exempt, that player usually has to be twice as good as a guy who isn't, otherwise they just send the kid down.

I dont like it, it's just usually what happens

- Hank Balling

It was a situation where they couldn't send Samuelsson and Krebs down to Rochester because they had fully earned the right to be here even when everyone was healthy. Fortunately by that time the TDL had passed. I suspect one of Butcher and/or Bjork would have hit waivers.

this guy is joker's replacement. He only wants to play 2 years so he will not hold the kids back.

Training camp is where you really see this issue. There were camps where Nylander or Olofsson looked good and then when it's time to play, Seth Griffith is on the team instead.

It feels like wishful thinking to me that Bjork gets waived, and the Sabres very well could carry 2 extra D (Fitz and Pilut), so that means to me that Vinnie is in the lineup and one guy we want to see is in Rochester unless injuries carve a path.

Yeah, I could see this, think Bjork is only still around for now until we see how JJ or Quinn acclimate. If there ready he gone.

I have faith that if both dominate, they will be kept. I don't think they'll need to be twice as good, but Kev left room on this roster for them. There's 12 forwards here without the two. Bjork is an easy bench forward. I don't think they have a problem sitting Vinnie if they dominate. But if they both don't, or one doesn't, that one is probably going back because Kev won't allow them to sit.

All it takes is one injury to get them both here.

Anything ideas prior to camp is just speculation. I'm pretty excited to see them compete.

That has to be the key, compete and win.
The difficulty is spots on the 4th line, IMO. I don't want to see any of Mitts, Krebs, Cozens, Quinn, nor Peterka on the 4th line. To me, those spots belong to the likes of Girgs, Hino, Okposo...sure, any of them could play higher, but should they really?
The time has arrived to flush-out the capabilities of the younger guys. That means it is possible/likely one of Quinn or Peterka spend time down...perhaps on a rotational basis.

I think if we think about it, or they deploy it in a more modern approach, it can work. Defensive zone FOs, Asplund Girgensons Okposo Cozens Lyubushkin Power. NZ use a normal balanced line, offense use strong O line(s).

There's unconventional ways to think about how deployment will work without pigeonholing the lines to be "lines" so much as individual productive deployment.

There's other factors involved including chemistry and balance, which should really be established in camp and over the course of a season. You want to get several guys comfortable playing with one another. So in 33/66/100% of the ice, you may have a group of 4 or 5 guys that can play anywhere on the ice at a given time all comfortable with one another.

For example, maybe Asplund is with Mitts 66% of the time in the NZ and OZ. Thompson Skinner and Tuch same thing. Then maybe Asplund with Cozens for some NZ or DZ. poop like that.

Mixing and matching combinations of lines based on the zone the play is starting in is a managerial nightmare, especially if you add in changing on the fly when the play moves to another zone.

I get that, and you may be right in that is how it goes.

Granato needs to balance the usage of his players on several fronts...
-effective evaluation of the young guys in all situation...see what you got
-chemistry between players to form effective pairs and trios
-winning, time to start building a winning culture...who's got it, who needs more development
-development, building a core in the young guys by giving them challenging situations to build on and take their game to another level

That is going to be fun to watch. Granato is perfect for this challenge..imagine Krueger missing out on some 70 goals by playing Skinner on the 4th with Tage on the wing for 8 minutes a night!

Agreed this would be the best scenario. I think there's a good chance that Bjork gets waived to Roc. I've been listening to Sabres Live most days - Duff and Marty said he should be in Rochester next season, which I thought was interesting because they're never critical of Sabres players like that. Hoping it turns out that way.
