Eric Hosmer rejected the trade to Washington and will not be part of the Soto deal, per source. Now the Padres have less than five hours to figure out what to do with Hosmer, who is owed $39 million from 2023-25.

______________________________

Man, it's really unfortunate that this didn't kibosh the trade entirely. Would've been bonkers if it did.

- GreatGigInTheSky

No one will be trading anything of value for Hosmer now that they know the Padres simply through him into the Soto trade.

Bass is probably better than Pop with some more strikeout stuff. Jays have lots of options at SS

Too bad Bass wasn't this good when he was last with the Jays. Could've just kept him since then.

Did it to themselves, too.

If the trade for Soto didn't require him to be in it, then why the poop didn't they make a separate trade with him? It's like they just thought he'd accept their bullpoop.

Pretty trash way to treat a vet player, really.

Good Canadian boy. Right handed reliever

He's my friend's nephew. We've been watching Zach pitch for a while now.

We drafted Zach in 2014, I think it was, but didn't sign him.

We had Bass from waivers in 2020 and let him walk for nothing.

For the privilege of signing two guys we could have had for nothing, we gave up Groshans. It feels like a massive loss in trade value.

Why the (frank) would Hosmer accept the deal? Play for a last place team going nowhere in a poophole town vs play for a contender that just got much better in southern California. Knowing that Washington was on his no trade list - what the hell were they thinking?

Groshans was always a trade chip and nothing more. Jays were dealing from a position of strength up the middle - with good young players. Jays just traded their Jeremy Bracco.

Hundreds of guys come and go. Their value goes up and down. They have more value now. Groshans has less. We can’t get them for nothing now.

It's like they thought the player would just accept being traded, since the team wants to trade him. Like, the (frank)ing audacity.

I hope he gets traded to a team that beats them in the playoffs.

The projections on Groshans have fallen - good big league player, but not a star player.

His value as a prospect definitely outweighs what we received in this trade - by a significant margin.

Bass is having an excellent season. 1.41 ERA with a WAR of 1.6 has averaged just over a strikeout per inning pitched. He's also under contract for this year and next for a very reasonable $3M. Groshans wouldn't make the Jays for the forseeable future. Good move for Atkins.

Value is relative in this case. Jays have several young middle infielders and Groshans would not have made this team for several years. Bass addresses an immediate need. Good reliever that means we will see less of Trevor Richards.

Let's put this in perspective - or at least the perspective I have on it:

Nick Robertson for Cedric Paquette and Ryan Dzingel. You're trading a player who has no actual professional success, but has the potential for it for two players who are largely borderline players / 4th line guys.

Bass was a waiver claim two years ago - but is having a good season. He has a great WHIP this year, and typically has always been decent in this area. His K9 this year is also not too bad. He's making $3m. You can accidentally make that after the age of 27 in baseball. I mean . . . Aaron Loup makes $7.5m.

Pop, I know, because I've watched him a lot - and I wanted us to get him. As I said, he's he friend's nephew. In 2020 he was rehabbing Tommy John in his garage at home by throwing into a net. He couldn't go anywhere, so it was just there . . . throwing in the garage. When he finally made it, we were watching him pitch on TV - and he's got nice breaking stuff - nice movement.

But he was a Rule-5 claim by the Marlins. Both guys don't have a lot of trade value. I'm not saying they are not valuable, I'm saying that you should have been able to get them for less than Groshans and use him as a chip in a more valuable package.

Pop is a groundball guy.

Wouldn’t mind one more, high leverage guy for the pen, a starter and a bat. Atkins should have everything wrapped up by December.

I kid

Even more if Robertson played LD where’s there’s a logjam. Groshans isn’t going to play ahead of Bo, Espinal or Chapman for a while

Yes and no. Just because you're rich, it doesn't change what $10 will buy. It just changes how much you value that $10. Being reckless with the $10 could come back to bite you in the ass - especially since you're not guaranteed to always be rich.

Let's take this analogy and use it and we'll drop it because I will have at least felt that I illustrated my point that we overpaid by giving up Groshans in this deal:

When Potvin emerged and supplanted Fuhr, we didn't give away Fuhr because we had a better goalie and didn't need Fuhr - instead we parlayed him into Andreychuk, Puppa and a 1st (Kenny Jonsson).

When Cujo replaced Potvin, we didn't give away Felix because we had a better goalie and didn't need Felix - instead we held on for the right deal, and we traded him for Bryan Berard.

As long as something has value elsewhere, how you value it isn't what's important - because it's not about the value to you, it's about the value of the currency you're using. All I am saying is that Groshans may not have had much value to the Jays' organization, but he had greater value to MLB at large as a trade chip.
