Did it to themselves, too.
If the trade for Soto didn't require him to be in it, then why the poop didn't they make a separate trade with him? It's like they just thought he'd accept their bullpoop.
Pretty trash way to treat a vet player, really. - GreatGigInTheSky

Let's put this in perspective - or at least the perspective I have on it:
Nick Robertson for Cedric Paquette and Ryan Dzingel. You're trading a player who has no actual professional success, but has the potential for it for two players who are largely borderline players / 4th line guys.
Bass was a waiver claim two years ago - but is having a good season. He has a great WHIP this year, and typically has always been decent in this area. His K9 this year is also not too bad. He's making $3m. You can accidentally make that after the age of 27 in baseball. I mean . . . Aaron Loup makes $7.5m.
Pop, I know, because I've watched him a lot - and I wanted us to get him. As I said, he's he friend's nephew. In 2020 he was rehabbing Tommy John in his garage at home by throwing into a net. He couldn't go anywhere, so it was just there . . . throwing in the garage. When he finally made it, we were watching him pitch on TV - and he's got nice breaking stuff - nice movement.
But he was a Rule-5 claim by the Marlins. Both guys don't have a lot of trade value. I'm not saying they are not valuable, I'm saying that you should have been able to get them for less than Groshans and use him as a chip in a more valuable package. - Monkeypunk
Would've been nice, for sure. |

Yes and no. Just because you're rich, it doesn't change what $10 will buy. It just changes how much you value that $10. Being reckless with the $10 could come back to bite you in the ass - especially since you're not guaranteed to always be rich. - Monkeypunk
I think you are getting caught up in where a player was drafted or how he came to be in the majors or on his current team. It's not always important when establishing value. Tyler Biggs was drafted in the first round by the Leafs at #22 and he was pure poop. Never played a single game in the NHL. Garnie's favorite player was drafted by the Leafs in the 7th round with the 188th pick. After his current contract expires, i expect the Oilers to sign him for $6M x 7

Let's take this analogy and use it and we'll drop it because I will have at least felt that I illustrated my point that we overpaid by giving up Groshans in this deal:
When Potvin emerged and supplanted Fuhr, we didn't give away Fuhr because we had a better goalie and didn't need Fuhr - instead we parlayed him into Andreychuk, Puppa and a 1st (Kenny Jonsson).
When Cujo replaced Potvin, we didn't give away Felix because we had a better goalie and didn't need Felix - instead we held on for the right deal, and we traded him for Bryan Berard.
As long as something has value elsewhere, how you value it isn't what's important - because it's not about the value to you, it's about the value of the currency you're using. All I am saying is that Groshans may not have had much value to the Jays' organization, but he had greater value to MLB at large as a trade chip. - Monkeypunk
I think 22' has had a significant impact on his 'prospect' status. He was a good, but not great, prospect coming into the season (at the most optimistic of times) and he's struggled all year. He's slowly defining himself as a contact/no power/corner fielder - not exactly a set of traits that excite.

Again, his stock has fallen - especially since he's having a poor 2022 so far, but Groshans is still the #60 prospect on Baseball Prospectus. MLB had him #80 entering this year. He fell off of Baseball America's top 100 prospects list - but he was there.
I think his injury in 2019 has affected his performance and subsequently his prospect value. But not so much that being a top-100 guy doesn't still carry weight.

Jays gave up their 4th ranked prospect (#82 in baseball).
I could see how it might be considered a little high.
Pop has 4 more years of control (2-0 3.60 ERA), Bass is in his 2nd year of a 2 year deal (2-3 1,41 ERA). |

I said the same thing above - this year is not helping him.
This is two guys from our system I can immediately think of - Groshans and Martin - who have come back from injury and not been able to find their power through the adjustments they've been making. Is this a normal thing that just happens to prospects, or is there some problematic approach to the hitting instruction going on in A/AA ball?

Think I read something about paying most all of it. But not sure if it was just a path they might need to take, or if it's what they're actually doing. |

I wonder who the PTBNL is. I'm sort of hoping it's someone like Sixto Sanchez - that would at least make sense to me.
He may never make it back, but he has potential - and has been rehabbing TJ surgery since last July. By 2023, he should be ready to resume his career. He'll be 23 next year, and it would make sense that two guys who were higher on prospect lists, but have fallen down those lists to injuries could get swapped for one another.
