The discussion was Triumph in comparison to the Stones. There are many, many musicians that you can say are better than the members of the Stones. Those with musical expertise can answer better. However as a band, no comparison. Longevity has nothing to do with it.
Here is the Rolling Stone magazine top 100 guitarists of all time. Keith Richards is #4 all time. Rick Emmet did not make the list. Mick Taylor was also in the top 40. It seems as though the musical world does not agree with you.

I love the Stones, fantastic band and a classic example of the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts.
That being said, ranking Richards as the 4th greatest rock guitarist of all time is just ridiculous. He’s a fine player, but no virtuoso and, just off the top of my head, I can easily name 50 who blow him away. |

I see what you are saying, but that list also has Johnny Ramone at #28, Bruce Springsteen, Alex Lifeson all the way down at #98, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain etc.
Ric Emmet his head and shoulders above Keith Richards from a chops standpoint.
Hell, Johnny Ramone can barely play a guitar.
That list was more about accomplishment than ability.

I think they are talking more influential than talent with him...
Do you remember the old interview where he had full body capacity blood transfusions so he would be legal to tour ( no drug in his system--was it smack??)
Somehow I think the article missed the connection to BB King from the WWII and post WWII era. The roots of the modern electric blues style... without Charlie Christian who died of TB too damned young in 1942 and then T Bone Walkers influence BB and the others don't really develop the same

Your last sentence sums it up best. There are likely guitarists with no or low profile who would be worthy of a spot on the list. The best thing about the list is that it opens up conversation and debate.

In many cases, yes, but most of them belong. It is funny some of the songs they give as examples for their ranking.

Seems like been reading that same article for how many years now and nothing to very little changes!! Wish they purged more players who have the stink of losing etched into their souls. Have zero faith in this group of players who have been here for far to long.
Kessel would be the teams leading scorer. Let that sink in. Seems there is something left. Not that I want him on the team.
Dont want to hear about anymore underlying numbers when it comes to to tippet or Frost. time to actually start producing real numbers.
Be curious how much say the coach will have in the roster construction. He had to be on board with the Nic D signing I would imagine. However he doesn't appear to be a player he would want to play - hello it's me 2050
Can stinks be etched? |

Enjoyed the Kinks. He got some love from Sue Sheehan tho.

If we're just talking shredding/technical ability, there are literally thousands of guitarists out there who could play circles around many of the guys on this list. The world is simply chock full of talented, accomplished guitar players.
Performance, writing, style/image, innovation, message and just plain good luck (right place, right time, around the right people) have probably a greater impact on who's remembered and who's not than virtuosity.
I think that's what a list like that is trying to capture. |

I was actually just trying to stir up some shyte on here cause I get tired of the same ole same ole. The Flyers suck....yada yada yada. - Phillywhiteout
Yeah, I get that. With you there, for sure.
To compare the Stones and Triumph would be ridiculous simply because of the Stones longevity.
And, Yknow, songs too. I guess.
I should have actually said that Rick Emmett is a better musician than anyone that the Stones can put on stage or ever have put on stage.
No, probably shouldn’t have gone down that road, either. Look, there’s more to musicianship and ability than just flying solos. You never see guys like Vai or Buckethead top those lists, as well, despite their virtuosity. There’s a reason that even pros can be given a guitar and told to cover another artist, but not be able to get it to sound quite right. They all play the same notes, but get a completely different sound/feel. Keith is almost the definition of this.
He is certainly one of the most(if not the most) underrated guitarists of all time.
Not really sure how to measure that. I’ll give you this - Triumph was known as a live band, and I have a soft spot for people who crush it in concert.
Jam bands, who thrive on live music, are my favorite groups overall in general, not that I stick to one style.
I know that a few of the guys I’d put on my personal underrated list actually both voted on, and made their way onto, that list MJL posted. Guys like Anastasio, Trucks, Mascis, and Haynes. That being said…
It blows me away that many of the top 100 lists don't have him on there.
…I don’t put too much into the lists like this. They tend to piss me off, even if I like some of the people who contributed. What? Nels Cline is at this spot? But this dude I don’t care for is ranked here? And why the hell isn’t Larry Carlton where I’d slot him?! Preposterous!
Thanks! Oh, and please FIRE CHUCK!
I’m never sure if these two lines are a sign off or some sort of mic drop. But you’re welcome, and if I had the ability to do the firing, I’d happily pull the trigger. |
