Sadly Kap is that player where they are valuing his potential over what he is as a player. He shows flashes that he put it all together, he also shows potential that he could be an unstoppable player on the ice. Sadly the flashes come once every month, if not less. They are hoping he can at least do better than he has. Which I think he will definitely play better than last season, but I agree with all of you. We should have traded him off earlier or let him walk and used that money for players who show they can live up to their potential.

He's 26, he doesn't have potential anymore, he is what he is.

Most likely but some guys do have better/best seasons in late 20's ie ERod at 28. Definitely dont want to be spending 3.2 cap hit on a cap strapped team to find out if they can though hahah

Pretty much. The only thing you can really hope for is better luck in shooting %.

I'm fine with one-dimensional players as long as they're excelling at the one dimension they're good at. If Kap can score 15 to 20 goals and finish around 40/45 points? Great.

$3.2M for 40ish points a 15 to 20G is fair. I'd just rather he could pull that off from the 3rd line and not waste Geno's time.

So only 8 more points than he had last season and its great? I think that's achievable when you consider he had almost the exact same amount of points the season before last, as last season, in 39 less games hahah

I think his first season as a Penguin was an example of overachieving and that's what I think the best we can hope for. Personally, it's just going to drive me nuts watching him on the 2nd line. IMO he's more valuable accomplishing his points from the 3rd line. His style works worse with Geno than Zucker's does.

He also front-loaded his goals last year. I know he's not alone in that. Carter, ERod and McGinn all blew their loads in the first half.

Dom at the Athletic released his grading for best to worst contract efficiency in the league and the Pens surprisingly wind up as one of the best. #8.

Ten worst starting with the bottom first:
SJS
CBJ
CHI
PHI
AZ
STL
NYI
NYR
BUF

Is anyone here against:
Guentz -Sid-Rust
Heinen-Geno-Rakell
Zuck-Carter-Kap

Jake-Sid-Rakell
Heinen-Geno-Rust
Zuck-Carter-Kap
Archi/Poehling-Blueger-McGinn

is what I'd like to see.

Balance out the 2nd line with Heinen/Rust. I'd like to see Geno get one of the top 2 wingers on the team, and Rakell/Guentzel can both find those soft spots for Sid.

I'm not against that at all. Rakell in his short time with Sid looked good. Definitely gives Geno a better goal scorer.

They could send Archibald down. I bet they didn't expect to get Heinen back.
- 668710

I kind of think they plan to use Archibald as a 4th line and PK guy. Basically taking a role similar to ZAR and Boyle.

I could be surprised, but just feel like Sully will but a vet in that spot rather than a prospect. Heinen I think has the inside track to 3rd line.

Poehling is the wild card and I'm hoping he grabs a spot in the regular lineup instead of 13th guy. But even if he does beat Archibald, I'm guessing Archibald becomes the 13th forward rather than have a prospect sit.

I basically don't trust Sully to play a prospect with waiver exemption if it means waiving a vet if he thinks it's close.

As long as he's here, I'd like to give a healthy Geno and healthy Zucker another look. Never happened last year. Doesn't work I'm ok with Heinen, just see more upside in Zucker.

Also agree with what Boyd wrote about flipping Rust and Rackell.

Most likely, but there are late bloomers. Rust was a great example at age 27. That might be clouding their judgement here though. I think Kapanen's lack of hockey sense holds him back despite his puck skills.

Hockey sense and consistent effort, 2 of Sullivan's pet peeves which spells a few night's in the press box to clear his head..

Kap found himself riding the pine at the end of games routinely last year. I can't believe Sullivan wanted a player like that back. It's like the same disconnect that Sully and JR had.

He played 79 games last season.... And was it ever known for sure the few scratches were because Sully was trying to send a message or were they like last min personal reason, mild injury, etc scratches?

EDIT: just realized you said ride pine towards end of games, not scratches hahah... Yeah, there are a lot of nonsensical layers to the Kap re sign hahaha

Exactly, it's the ones that have hockey smarts but finally get that skill level up to match. Usually those are the late bloomers.

On now NHL NETWORK game 7 Pens vs Rangers. Surely should be a Pens blowout with their full team skating. Crosby..Jarry etc all playing. Sure Geno will have a big impact
