When the Leafs signed Clifford to 2 years, my first thought was, "Has Clune announced his retirement at the end of the year?" Why else would you sign him to 2 years? But if you wanted him to be the next shepherd for the young kids in the AHL - and the idea had been floated with him and he was agreeable, it would make sense.

He has a contract that's small enough that an NHL team may take a flyer on him if they needed it - but also big enough that it makes a one-way contract nice to have in the AHL.
