My guess is he still incorporates a portion of Barry's system but allows for a little more offensive freedom and creativity

Huberdeau’s new contract is like JT’s eluding taxes on bonuses if he claims US citizenship which I’m sure he is.

It’s an 8 year $10.5 Million deal. Here’s the contractual breakdown:

2023-24: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2024-25: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2025-26: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2026-27: $10.5 million total ($1 million salary / $9.5 million signing bonus)
2027-28: $10.5 million total ($1 million salary / $9.5 million signing bonus)
2028-29: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2029-30: $10.5 million total ($1 million salary / $9.5 million signing bonus)
2030-31: $10.5 million total ($5.5 million salary / $5 million signing bonus)

That’s $61.5 million in signing bonuses

Taxes don’t matter much.

Its crazy how they have to be so creative with players signing in Canada. Its such an imbalanced system.

Are the Isles going to sign anyone?
- SRam19

Yes, Chara and Greene on D. Also going to sign Marleau and Dustin Brown out of retirement. All done deals and waiting to announce after we trade Nelson and Dobson for Miller to clear Cap space.

Probably saves him $35 million plus in taxes. I don’t know about you but that would get my attention.

100%.....add to that the lockdowns, mandates etc. No thanks. Gotta think Austin Matthews comes back to the states after his contract is up. Would love to hear him tell the organization and its fans that he's earned the right to test free agency lol

If he does sign with Toronto it will be a bonus heavy deal just like JT and Huberdeau’s
deals.

It was even more bonus heavy in the beginning. His current base salary is $910k

https://www.capfriendly.com/players/john-tavares

First year of the deal his signing bonus was $15.25M and his base salary was $650k

edit: oh, Matthews...got it. Well pretty much the same

I find it amusing that no one in Hockey media talks about this Bonus tax rate stuff. It's almost like they know it's an advantage for Canadian teams so they refuse to discuss it...

The Matthews one is a little surprising to me b/c he is American. I was wondering whether he has to pay our tax rates or theirs... or both.

The Forbes article that wrote about Tavares contract had him making more on his signing bonus ($71 mill .. that netted him around $55 mill).. than he would have made on the entire Islander's offer b/c of taxes. He then gets his salary and whatever he makes on the $55 mill he has in the bank via investments or interest. Then add all the commercials and ad $$. It was a no brainer for him.

I dont think its an advantage for Canadian teams....in fact I think its the opposite. They had to get creative (i.e frontloading) in order to be competitive. Look at Gaudreau, and Tkatchuk.....they got outta Canada as soon as they could. Given the option, most NHLers are opting for an American team vs a Canadian. Even with the bonus contracts, you still have a 1-1.30 dollar differential

That’s actually and interesting angle

It would make the cap even but the players would still be taxed differently depending on what Country and or State the team is in.

That would be an interesting idea. But lets say a player gets a year deal worth $70m (after taxes) from the Isles. Then after 3 years he gets traded to, say, Vegas. How would that work (tax-wise)? How does that change the cap hit? Would it now be the entire contract including the taxes that were taken out? I like the idea, just not sure how it would work.

I'm just curious if an American team is able to do a contract similar to a bonus-laden one. Is the entire contract amount taxed? Bonuses taxed or taxed differently?

I’m not an accountant however if a Canadian gets paid bonuses in the USA they are taxed at 15% as well I believe. However I’m not sure what exemptions they receive on the Canadian tax side and how one claims their true residency. Read the Forbes article I posted the link to. It gets into some of the particulars.

On Nites idea I think it would be a net Cap. So the Amount the player makes net after taxes etc. is the cap hit. If you’re traded to A team with no state income tax then more of you contract would count towards the Cap. However players would still want to sign where their tax liability was lower with all other factors equal. It would actually take away the advantage the non income tax states teams enjoy now. I don’t think the NHLPA would go for it.
