Huberdeau’s new contract is like JT’s eluding taxes on bonuses if he claims US citizenship which I’m sure he is.

It’s an 8 year $10.5 Million deal. Here’s the contractual breakdown:

2023-24: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2024-25: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)
2025-26: $10.5 million total ($3.5 million salary / $7 million signing bonus)

The Forbes article that wrote about Tavares contract had him making more on his signing bonus ($71 mill .. that netted him around $55 mill).. than he would have made on the entire Islander's offer b/c of taxes. He then gets his salary and whatever he makes on the $55 mill he has in the bank via investments or interest. Then add all the commercials and ad $$. It was a no brainer for him.

Its almost criminal.....but I guess you gotta be that bonus laden to even the playing field.

I dont think its an advantage for Canadian teams....in fact I think its the opposite. They had to get creative (i.e frontloading) in order to be competitive. Look at Gaudreau, and Tkatchuk.....they got outta Canada as soon as they could. Given the option, most NHLers are opting for an American team vs a Canadian. Even with the bonus contracts, you still have a 1-1.30 dollar differential

That would be an interesting idea. But lets say a player gets a year deal worth $70m (after taxes) from the Isles. Then after 3 years he gets traded to, say, Vegas. How would that work (tax-wise)? How does that change the cap hit? Would it now be the entire contract including the taxes that were taken out? I like the idea, just not sure how it would work.

I’m not an accountant however if a Canadian gets paid bonuses in the USA they are taxed at 15% as well I believe. However I’m not sure what exemptions they receive on the Canadian tax side and how one claims their true residency. Read the Forbes article I posted the link to. It gets into some of the particulars.

On Nites idea I think it would be a net Cap. So the Amount the player makes net after taxes etc. is the cap hit. If you’re traded to A team with no state income tax then more of you contract would count towards the Cap. However players would still want to sign where their tax liability was lower with all other factors equal. It would actually take away the advantage the non income tax states teams enjoy now. I don’t think the NHLPA would go for it.
