The Britney issue is kabuki. The sentence is leverage. Russia will pretzel the US into giving up much more than the terrorist that’s being floated. Other brutal regimes around the world will take note. I expect more of these lopsided Bowe Bergdahl and Britney trades. - Minnyhock
So when the US goes to war with Russia, and IT WILL happen eventually, the first bomb dropped should be called the "Griner Nuke" or G-Bomb.

No way not with President Biden in charge. He has demanded her release at once. He will take a hard line approach.

That sentence had nothing to do with Grinier, her crime, or Russian law. It had everything to do with Ukraine. If they had not found her, they would have found someone else.
Anyone who pays even 1% of attention to foreign news would know that. It is amazing it even needs to be explained. This sort of thing happens all the time.
Also, btw, I recall someone posting very emotionally about how the world has become so unforgiving of anyone making a mistake. How nowadays we are so quick to judge a young person's folly and never give that person a second chance when we should.
I think it was the Brendan Leipsic incident. Any guesses about the identity of that person? - PT21
Is he named Alexander? |

Did she break the law Bill yes or no?
You do not enter countries that hate Americans with illegal items. Countries that will look to stick it to you. It really is that simple. - hello it's me 2050
I think there is a little grey here and Bill
Has put his finger on it. She did make a mistake and is about to pay an out-sized price for it unless we cut some kind of a deal to swap her. The sad truth is that this is not unique to Russia but is a common phenomenon when a country decides to politicize certain offenses. |

She did not "suffer the consequences" of "breaking the law", knucklehead. Anymore than you would "suffer the consequences" if you were publicly castrated with garden shears for "breaking the law" in patronizing AMPs.
No one is questioning the conviction. They are questioning the sentence.

I am not privy to his real name. I do know some of his past aliases, which includes Rinaldo. |

You know this before you travel. So why put yourself, then eventually your country in this positon?
This is pure common sense. Unless she is just one stupid phuck.

dont like the sentence , what a shame. This is what you get when you do stupid things in countries like Russia, China, Iran, and such.
None of it is shocking in an way.

That’s only bluster. He’s sending his emissary Chuck Fletcher over to negotiate the release.

This is better than "break the law, suffer the consequences" (where you suggest it a question of universal morality) but still not fully accurate. These sort of things happen in these countries when it is politically convenient for them to happen. 1 Year ago, the same crime would have gotten her 15 days.
Having said that, my personal opinion is if that is the game you want to play, you sobs, well so can we. Lets do a couple of raids on Overchkin's house and see if we find some traces of weed. I suspect chances are good we will.
Then send him to Guantanamo and ask for Grinier in return. |

The law she actually broke, even within Russia, is a minor offense. The charges were draconian (smuggling with criminal intent rather than possession of a small quantity of an illegal substance) as was the sentence.
There was a foreign hockey player in the KHL a few years ago that was arrested for possession of a small quantity of marijuana.
He got a 60-day sentence and a (very hefty) fine. Griner got 9 years in prison. The main difference wasn't the offense itself. It was the timing. - bmeltzer

I personally don't care about Griner, but it's nice to know that if this ever happened to me or somebody I did care about, there's hope that the State Dept would try to bring us home.
We can debate what constitutes a fair trade, and whether Viktor Bout should be freed, and whether Griner should face consequences for breaking the law, but the wingnuts who want to see fellow Americans rot in Russian work camps are just sick. |
