Agree! Lots of people aren’t worth what they get paid. Just be happy it’s not your $.

Who is Jonny Gaudreau?

Also, happy to see "crowd sourcing" is back.

Correct - I’ll take the guy who actually wants to play in a hockey market instead of hiding in a college football market. Don’t you wonder why he did not even get an offer from Boston, NY, NYI, NJ, Philly, DC and Pitt? All of those teams are closer to his south jersey home than Columbus. All seemingly would have been preferred by him since he wanted to be close to home and yet no offers. Kinda telling… buyer beware

Also prefer the guy who is a better penalty killer and prob less of a liability defensively.

JG has gotten a little better defensively of late, but Hub is just a better all around player and actually wants to be there.

Side note, I could not care less about the flames.

Huberdeau is better than Gaudreau, but taking the contracts in to account I would rather have Gaudreau at 9.5 for 7 years than Huberdeau at $10.5, expiring 9 years from now. Yuck!

Treliving panicked and now he is locked in to one of the worst contracts in the league. Half way through this contract it will start to feel like the Parise contract and become an anchor. Which would be ok if they were contenders now, but they are not. They are worse today than they were at the end of the season, and I said all year that last season they were the worst “good” team. Sitter will get them to the playoffs but they will never go on a run, and in a few years will be trying to rebuild while also having a horrific contract.

The guy screwed up. Didn't inform the team he wanted out and teams thinking they had no chance getting him moved on. Philly wasn't expecting it to happen, so they didn't bother moving players out. Heck, they could have traded JVR for his rights and know he would sign. Better than paying a steep price to a team to take a contract. Or even a sign and trade, so you get 8 years.

Side note, his agent loses out as a result of waiting to the end then walking away from $10.5M.

The Huberdeau contract will go down as one of the worst in the league. If its not already. That is horrible value. Huberdeau has passed 100 points once in his career and it was after 10 years of playing with Barkov who is way better than any flame. He has no chemistry with any flames and has never played in the west. He is going to be lucky to get 70 points

It may look bad in a few years. But Darnell Nurses contract is awful now and he hasn’t even started it yet. It will be worse than Huberdeau’s by a country mile.

I think Huberdeau is a better player but signing him to that extension is a huge risk before seeing how he fits in with the team.

According to last season's stats/metrics (even though they tied in points), and the playoffs, JG was better than JH (not to be confused with Johnny Hockey), but not by much. Yes, JG signed for less in Columbus, but when the chips are down, and even though Huberdeau didn't have a great playoffs last year, in the past he has shown to be clutch, he's bigger and stronger in the corners and protecting the puck, so for the next 5 years I'd rather have Huberdeau even though he's a bit more expensive. Who knows how this contract will age or how well these players will age and stay in shape, and the salary cap should be over 90 million in a few years... For now I'm happy, Calgary should be happy getting a great player still in his prime and should be fine until he's 34-35. Now we just need a decent 2C to bump Backlund down to 3C...

Huberdeau is not the better player. Gaudreau is better defensively and a better goal-scorer. He has a higher GPG than Huberdeau. They're not THAT different though overall.

I did another quick analysis on NST and Johnny definitely beats Huberdeau in all major categories.

I'll take Huberdeau because Gaudreau has a history of disappearing in the playoffs with the exception of the game 7 winner vs Stars

I assume you are basing this on just last year, when several Flame players had career years. Sutter brought so much structure to our backend it even showed in Markstroms numbers. Word is Weegar will be resigning soon as well. Our top 4 D are better than they were last year. I have watched Gaudreau all these years & I would definitely take Huberdeau over Gaudreau. Also remember, Gaudreau was offered the exact same deal as Huberdeau. The previous 2 years prior to last year Gaudreau was not even a PPG player. Over the last 3 years Huberdeau was the top 3 in scoring behind McJesus & Drysaddle.

They are worth every single penny...and MORE. The fact that we're online talking about them, that over the course of a season millions of people pay to see them perform live, and many many millions more watch on TV, is just part of it. How many professionals do you know that started perfecting their craft in their backyard when they were SIX YEARS OLD??? and how many of the successful professionals that you know drove in the snow at 6am to go perfect their craft 5days a week....when they were SIX YEARS OLD???!!! On top of this, they have to be the cream, of the cream, of the cream, of the crop, and THEN, after THAT, they have to be at the right place in the right time to get noticed, and they have to avoid all of the distractions that come with adolescence and the teenage years and stay focused.

This is probably my biggest annoyance in life actually...people whining about professional athletes that get paid because YOU mark up their value, which they deserve 100%. It is one thing and one thing ONLY....jealously.

Pro athletes are worth every. single. penny.

This is the dumbest post I’ve seen on this site in a while. No one is saying pro athletes aren’t worth paying a ton of money. They are saying that relative to their value and the market rate, these are overpayments. That is a very big deal in a salary cap league.
