That’s what it used to mean to be a Flyers type player. |

Really? Who was that guy on the Avalanche? Or on Tampa? - MBFlyerfan
Maybe watch their playoff games. You’ll find the answer there |

Signing a 32 year old goalie with a total of 4 NHL games over 8 years to be your backup should help the GAA of the team. - rayc16
Another reason this offseason stank to the high heavens that often gets overlooked. And to think they could've allocated the ND contract to sign a useful back up so that their starter, who has an injury history, doesn't have to carry this team. I fear another long year for Hart. Hopefully not as bad as that year they used 9 separate goalies or whatever it was. |

It's a very strange concept for them to think they are the only team out there trying to focus on working hard, and being hard to play against. On coming into camp in great shape, or sticking up for teammates.
The only tangible thing I've heard them focus on is lowering GA. It's all Fletcher has cried about in terms of building a team, for his whole tenure. - FlyerFan3260
Do you know what beats players that work hard and are hard to play against? Players with a higher skill level that work hard and are hard to play against. Play with the puck more and play more in the other teams end. That's how you lower GA. You can be better defensively but that will only amount to marginal improvement.

What is wrong with giving Sandstrum a legit shot at being the backup? |

No problem with giving him a shot, and hopefully he wins the gig. But he's not exactly lit up the AHL or ECHL for that matter. He has looked decent in his cup of coffee in the NHL though. I'd just be surprised if they don't give the job to the seasoned AHL vet and have Sandstrom continue to work on stuff in the minors. |

They should have given Sandstrom more games this year once the year went awry so they had a better idea if he could handle the back up role. |

Point is some want the “kids” to play. Then when one gets a shot some will still complain.
Now to me it should be his job to lose as they know him and he is home grown player. Now of course it will be the opposite. |

Absolutely. More proof of the incompetence.
There was zero reason not to have done that. |

Not really about wanting the kids to play, more so about not having a decent fall back option should Hart falter or get hurt. The time to play Sandstrom was last year when Hart got hurt. They could've rode him down the stretch since they didn't seem all that keen on re-signing Jones anyway.
I hope it's his job to lose, it would be nice to have two homegrown goalies. Don't fault me for being skeptical though. Considering they just signed a 4th liner for 4 years, brought back MacEwan and still have Brown blocking the paths of other homegrown players. |

If he gets the job it is a win win. He plays well they have a competent backup on the cheap for a few years. He stinks they lose games.
Bold part just makes you shake your head.

1) trades for risto giving up major assets. Signs to horrendous extension
2) buyout of lindblom( who is definition of your examples by the way) and signs nick d
3) z.m. Offered qualify offer and signs eventual contract.
Their actions say otherwise. At least this year for sure
This list is a good example of misallocated salary. Another small but still relevant example is signing both Seeler AND Braun. Why are 2 #7 defensemen needed, especially when you have Attard ? Ok, you'll say depth. But the depth is all at the same talent level. The goal for a GM is to leverage cap funds to acquire players at all skill levels, tiered all the way through the line up down to 4th line and 3rd pair - not to have mostly middle 6 forwards with 2nd & 3rd pair d men. At the very least Chuck failed the inventory test. He needed to count the number of players who are first liners vs. depth players. Based on the make up of this roster, didn't happen.

Everybody loves to win.
Not everybody hates to lose.
I don't mind if the Flyers prioritize the latter when they gauge intangibles. However, the obsession w/ 200-ft, "Flyers hockey", Western Canadian values kinda poop has to go.

There's no need for players for protection anymore. I agree nothing wrong with a Tochett player. Skill and toughness. Just toughness though. No need. It's a skating, passing, skill league. Have to be able to battle and win pucks. No need for players in the lineup because they can "dance". - MJL
I would agree this is not 1974 anymore, but I watch playoff hockey like a lunatic and to say that toughness is not important is off base. My opinion.
Not saying we need two goons on our 4th line, but there are many examples of teams who had the talent to win, however, they simply were not tough enough. Tampa for instance.. look at New York from the moment Panarin got jumped to now. They are a completely different team now because they are tougher. They just are.
Ya think TO misses Kadri?
Look at what adding Pat Maroon did for Tampa.
Teams need ditch diggers too. You can’t have 20 guys skating around like the ice capades. If that’s the makeup of your team, your superstars will without a doubt get taken advantage of..
Also let’s stop with blaming the supposed “old guard” for the ills of the current flyers. Their issues are because of Ron Hextall and Fletcher.
The old guard left the day to day when 27 started and Torts did not even interview with them.

If Hart gets hurt or falters than its the same thing as last year. Why not give a young guy some playing time?

Attard is most likely going to the AHL. Braun was signed to be the 6th defenseman. Not the 7th.

Any idea what battle and win pucks means? I want my team to be strong and tough on the puck. Tough around the net at both ends in the greasy areas of the ice. I don't care about fighting or pushing other players around. If that's the only attribute that a player brings, then he is not a necessary player.
If you want to disregard the major problems with the organization and turn a blind yet. That's on you.

I think the point the poster made was that you can’t waste a roster spot on a guy who brings nothing but fighting. Reaves, McCarron, D Lo, McEwen, Kurtis Gabriel, Zach Kassian, etc don’t bring anything else. The Tkachuk’s, Tom Wilson, Corey Perry, Maroon and even Lucic bring something along with the fighting. |

I think the reason those attributes swing in is because they are picking not at the top end and especially after the 1st round. A high skill guy with any semblance of a well-rounded game is gone by then. Choice becomes between high skill rawness which may or may not pan out. And some less random attributes like 'toughness' and '200 foot game' which are surer things. And they choose the surer things, which shows that they either have no patience, or no faith in their staff to develop those raw skills. |
