Too bad the Flyers didn’t choose between MacEwen and D Lo. One makes the other redundant. Yes, D Lo kills penalties but how effectively? He was on the 2nd unit of a poor Wild PK. He was worse there than the guy he replaced. A rising cap will make his celery not much of an issue. But the term is an albatross.
- Minnyhock

My question is will he be on either of the top 2 PK units? He is too slow and doesn't have the instincts to play the PK.

Exactly. Okay, Deslaurier kills penalties but is he good at it. MacEwen busts his ass every shift but is he effective? In my opinion, neither player is a good NHL player for their role. Nor do they have any upside. Those roster spots, including the one that might go to PatricK Brown should be given to younger players who have some upside. We don't need to have a prototypical 4th line.
- MJL

Tired of the well he works hard mantra. So what. If that is all you got then you know this player isn't an NHL level player.

This isn’t my argument though. This is an argument made by most of the guys who post here against MacEwen before the Nick D signing was even a Conscious thought. “If you play on the 4th line, you should at least kill penalties”. Nobody said anything about how well the player could kill penalties and let’s face it, we’re a bad penalty killing team with or without Deslauriers. The real issue is Deslauriers is labeled a fighter and most of you don’t like players who can “only fight”. My issue with Deslauriers is money and term of contract and he couldn’t at least beat up Nick Seeler last season.

For me outside of those points , if you can play then you can play. When Donald Brashear was here, he was a fighter in a bottom 6 role without special teams but I also felt like he could play. Primeau, Kapanen and Brashear in my mind was a great checking line.

Now, do I want Nick Deslaurier on my team? Not at all. I’m just not using the excuse that he’s “just a goon”.

Nic isn't a bad PKer, he's even kinda decent w/o the puck at ES.

But there's a huge sacrifice when the team has the puck. Like they'll basically be attacking shorthanded with him on the ice.

What did the GM say? We need to play with the puck more. The single biggest factor in hockey to becoming a better team is to play with the puck more. No matter how well you defend, if you're spending too much time defending. You won't be a good team. There is just too much skill on the league. Need players who help tilt the ice in the other direction. Any player can play on the PK and get PK ice time. How good is he? With the Flyers PK, is that what they need. Someone who isn't a bad Pker?

I think Nic can have some PK success against teams with middle of the road to bottom power plays. His weaknesses are magnified against teams with top one third in the league power plays. Nic plays hard, finishes his checks and will block shots. Nic didn’t get a single block against the Blues in 5 games in the playoffs. The Blues moved the puck so quickly that Nic couldn’t get in front of shots or even get his stick in lanes. Nic offers protection but he needs it too.

The Flyers and Wild got Nic to be an enforcer. Enforcer is pc and a softer term for goon. Sure the Wild said they got him for his hitting, energy, tenacity, clubhouse presence and he can pk and chip in a goal once in a while. They got him to protect Kaprizov and Fiala if they’re honest. Foligno and Greenway were doing that but Foligno had over 20 goals so the Wild wanted him on the ice and Greenway was out hurt or in playing hurt.

Last fall the Avs picked up MasDermid. The Denver Post said they were getting an enforcer. They called him a ‘throwback deterrent.’ Nic is the same thing. He is a very likable enforcer.

It showed a fundamental misunderstanding of what made Chris Pronger so good -- which is (frank)ed up because Flyers brass got to watch Prongs up close for a couple of seasons.

Prongs could have been 6-0 190 and still dominated, because he was legit one of the smartest and best passing dmen in the history of the game. That isn't something that you develop after draft day. It's either inherent, or it's not.

Morin was never gonna come within a light year of Prongs.

- Tomahawk

Wasn't one of the people who thought Morin's play could evolve to some imitation of Pronger ... Pronger? I vaguely recall him being involved in the scouting/early analysis of Morin.

Perhaps I misremember...

I’m just making the point, that even though I don’t want this guy either, my reasons go beyond “he’s just a fighter”. You can be a good player and still be a fighter. In my opinion Donald Brashear was a decent player.

Case and point, I can’t stand Mike Rupp. I thought he was a goon for the most part. I thought his comments about Keith Yandle on nhl network came hollow to me. Apparently there are guys on this board who disagree and came to Rupp’s defense. So maybe there is some hope for Nick D.

That was the dream of those in the room who wanted to take him, even Chris Pronger himself:

Not really.

Case in point, 2013 draft... they chose to take a guy who's absolute ceiling was Zac Rinaldo (Tyrell Ghoulbourne) while skilled, two-way guys like Buchnevich, Guentzel and Bjorkstrand were still available. Now all those players are top-line, all-situations NHL wingers.

That's after throwing away the 11th-overall pick on a guy who never exhibited any sort of skill (Morin), while talented two-way guys like Morrissey, Pulock and Theodore were available. Those guys are now all top-pairing dmen.

Nobody is saying that they would have picked those other players for certain, but it just shows that this team is simply not prioritizing the right things when evaluating talent.

ok, but they have selected guys like Giroux, Gagne, Rubtsov, Sanheim, Ghost, Frost... are any of these epitomes of the Western Canadian player you suggest they are biased towards?

Maybe I just misunderstood what you mean they are biased towards.

Individual scouts can still get their own guys across the line if they lobby hard and there's no strong consensus to push against. But in the absence of that, and if there's no clear cut BAP, the consensus seems to tend to default to the 200-ft, "Flyers hockey" kinda guys.

Frost Sanheim Foerester TK Brink York, these are all high somewhat recent draft picks. I think this Flyers hockey Mantra is a bit of BS

There is a kid I sometimes play tennis with. Meaning he is much better than me, and kicks my butt (not hard to do when you are 31 playing a 53 year old). Anyway, this kid goes to a bunch of Flyers games "because of the atmosphere". He couldn't name 5 players on the roster. He goes with some friends and has a "great time."

Meaning that maybe Flyers are a bit more canny than you think in catering to guys like him and not you. Lets see what the attendance figures are for this season.

So you think the majority of fans that go to the game don't really care about the on ice product. Just want to hang out some friends and have a great time? What's a ticket cost these days? Add in parking. Gas to travel to the game if driving. Some beers or food. Why would someone want to spend that coin when they could just simply go to the neighborhood bar with your buddies and have a "great time"

Are you seriously suggesting that the majority of potential fans, the season ticket holders and game plan buyers don't really care about the on ice product? That the guy who just wants to have a "great time" outnumbers the fans who care about how well the team does? So that's who the Flyers are catering to and are being canny in putting the product they have built out there?

He didn’t suggest the majority.

The team could care less about who goes. (Pun intended)

They care about maybe ticket sales.

They market gimmicks to drive ticket sales. They don’t really target just one certain type group

It doesn't have to be a majority. All it does is to be equal or greater than the # of informed fans (as exemplified by Tomahawk and his ilk who might get pissed off at illogical hockey strategy) and that would still be a revenue adding step.

99% of your posts are reactions to someone. 90% of that 99% is critical. That makes for 89.1. And 90% of that time you have misread/misinterpreted/or at best, not given the poster the benefit of possible meaning before you post, which rounds to about 80%.

If it is beyond your capacity to correct this, which I think it is, could you not blindly just delete 4 of every 5 posts you make? That would make the remaining posts of sufficiently quality to make you an average poster on this site.
