Two years ago some were pining on here to trade the 8th overall pick (Quinn) + for Monahan.

Now Monahan is given away on a silver platter.

Yikes.

Goes to show you those “win now” moves can bite you in the arse and staying patient may not be a bad idea.

Just ask Vancouver fans that just watched Jim Benning screw up a wet dream given to him by his amateur scouting department

First player to make me feel old.

Finding out Kadri will be 32 at the start of the season made me feel really old.

I'm old enough to remember when people wanted him here. Adams is a putz, but he's a putz on a leash at least.

Cozens with the guns! Looking forward to seeing him take the next step. He's gonna be are ROR that will drop them when need be. Think the pandemic really hurt his development. Think he has his coming out party this year.

Also of note here is that Sean Monahan collapsed at the start of his prime, which is uncommon.

Fair, but at that time his injury problems were known and the points and analytical measures were already in decline

I wasn't a part of the 8 for Monahan group because as you said above, the warning signs were appearing at that time. Still doesn't change the fact that even with injuries, guys of his stature shouldn't be completely collapsing into the abyss at age 25. Bewildering that he hasn't been able to rebound.

We're in the rebuilding phase, no need for a slug to take up a young guys spot IMO.

Monahan probably blocked buffalo anyways

Sabres could use some center depth and they got a 1st for taking him.

Monahan could bounce back. Management doesn't want to improve the team

Would have loved a 1st, but it's also not until 25 or 26. Conditions are crazy.

2025 1st round pick (CGY) [Conditional]*
*Conditions: 1. If CGY’s 2024 1st round pick is between 20 and 32, MTL can take that pick instead. Result: TBD

Scenario: In the event CGY receives FLA’s 2025 1st round pick:
1. If both CGY AND FLA’s picks are NOT top 10, MTL will receive the better of the CGY and FLA 2025 1st round picks. Result: TBD

2. If CGY’s pick is top 10, AND FLA’s pick is NOT top 10, MTL receives FLA’s pick. Result: TBD

Scenario: In the event CGY does NOT receive FLA’s 1st round pick:

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is NOT top 10
1. MTL will receive the CGY pick, and
2. If FLA’s pick is not top 10, is a better pick than CGY’s, and was transferred to another team due to prior conditions, MTL will also receive CGY’s 2025 4th round pick.
Result: TBD

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is top 10:
1. If CGY’s pick is 1st overall, MTL will receive CGY’s 2025 3rd, and the better of CGY and FLA’s 2026 1st round pick. Result: TBD
2. If CGY’s pick is 2nd to 10th, MTL receives CGY’s 2025 1st round pick. Result: TBD

Think everyone would prefer Monahan + a 1st over Bishop + Vinny. It costs real $.

The difference is if you think Monahan can be rehabilitated in order to move him or not. If not... 6 mill is a lot to pay for a draft pick that might be in the bottom of the first round. We were in on JVR but the difference there is that a potential high first was the reward.

It's 1 year, they win either way. They'd have to actually spend to the cap floor, instead of abusing the system to get there.

To be fair, they tried to acquire Murray who is owed $15m in real money over the next two years

And a top 10 pick with him..... + the need for a real goalie.

Also do we not have his old goalie coach from his cup winning days? Coulda been part of the thought process?

True, but they were also going to retain. Maybe they sign Pysyk instead of Lyubushkin and the overall $ is somewhat similar.

Would have loved Kaspar over Ostlund.
