I'm sure they'll happily retain salary and take back an unwanted contract to make the numbers work. To think they wouldn't get a 1st and a high end prospect I think is not being serious.

Well yes, if they're taking a salary dump back or if there's an extension worked out that's a different story. But for just Kane with cap space retained...he's still just a rental and can pick and choose his destination (if he wants to be moved at all). So really the Hawks have zero leverage.

For example: Let's say Kane says he ONLY wants to go to Colorado. Well, Colorado isn't willing to trade a first rounder for him, only a 2nd and a prospect. Chicago's options are either take the best offer available from teams he will go to or lose him for nothing at the end of the year.

An auctioneer has no leverage other than the interest in the asset by more than one bidder. If there is more than one team interested Kane, there is a market. If Chicago takes back some cap and $000...it might be a very strong bidding market involving multiple teams.

Yes, but Kane has an NMC which will limit the amount of teams that can get into it. In my edited example, let's say he ONLY wants to go to one team. If that's the case, then that team can offer whatever they want with a "take it or leave it" attitude.

Moot point to do any of this now. Kane becomes way more valuable at trade deadline. And by that time he will know which teams are legitimate contenders and will only agree to a trade to one of them.

To Chicago Blackhawks - Alex Formenton, Tyler Boucher, Erik Brannstrom, Nikita Zaitsev, 2023 1st

*Mind you Sens don't need another top 6 forward, rather a right D-man
