If you waited another year and he scores 40 then you're screwed, he can say pay me $9-10 million long term or the most I will sign is 1 year and then he could walk in Free Agency.

Sure, I do understand that risk....to get $9.5/$10m he would have to climb higher than just achieving 40 G's, but rather something more akin to 40/50/90...IMO. So, we are more likely to have seen a $8.0-$8.5m.
Also, there is also risk that he regresses as well....making $7.0m an overpayment.
Point is it cuts both ways. It probably is worth the risk to extend him now. I'M ok with it, but It isn't a complete slam dunk either.
