I do believe we are getting an aging US RW with multiple cup rings and an ungodly knack for scoring goals...

Bring Kessel back and sign Subban.. It shouldn't be this hard for Dubas.

The really risky part there is that Sandin has been bad on the right side. Last year, he played on the right side with Brodie for 33 minutes and was -1; he played with Muzzin for 26 minutes and was -3; he played with Rielly for 49 minutes and was -3; his xG% was negative as well, so it wasn't just bad luck.

We're already rolling the dice on the netminders. Maybe we should be more stable on the defensive side.

- Monkeypunk

Ya wouldn't have been my plan but assuming they like Sandin it was going to be hard to move Muzzin and take a pass on Gio at 800k.

That said I think if they can get him into camp on time he can be much better on the right side. Hard to make that switch mid season with no practice time. Plus with Gio n Muzz bound to hit the IR at points I'm sure there's going to be a 1/2 season of left side for him.

Why not?

He is going to go somewhere, Leafs will be up there with interest and they are a contender. This isn’t a crazy idea for him to be playing for the leafs at some point next season.

You probably did the same thing with JT when it was talked about.

The only difference is that previously they had Sandin or Lilli as waiver exempt safety valves to move down to take some $s off the cap in case of the need to call someone up for a few games. Right now the only possible waiver exempt guy who might be in the team is Robertson. They need some wriggle room. My point is that any trade has to give them a little breathing space
- Canada Cup

Looking at CF ...all their spare part forwards are waiver exempt. Steeves, Douglas, McCann, Robertson, etc....

On D if they move Holl and get Sandin in at 1.4 then they can carry a 7th D like Benn or Mete all year.

Options is all I'm saying. I'm not holding my breath thinking Kerfoot is being dealt. It might happen ...but it doesn't HAVE to happen.

not so crazy but think of the cap implications.
the assets needed to acquire him this year.
are the Leafs going to move players for future consideration ??

I just don't see it happening but you never know.

Also ...

Agreed on goaltending. It's a total gamble.

On D I'm curious if they might be thinking that Muzzin-Brodie was a great pairing late and in the TB series ...and Gio-Lilly was nice most of their time together in mid/low leverage situations. I'd be comfortable with those pairings. The big wild card is can you pair Rielly-Sandin and have Keefe hide them in heavy offensive situations only. I wouldn't be surprised to see them try that in camp.

It’s not a question of having waiver exempt spare parts to call up, it’s having someone you can safely send down if you need to find cap space to call up an injury replacement. Last year they could just send Lilli or Sandin down to clear some $ to bring a guy if needed. Unless Robertson makes the team, won’t have anyone and risk losing Gaudette or somebody in a call up situation.

Any of the trade Kerfoot or Holl scenarios need to leave them room to work around this.

I think the challenge is that he's going to command a hefty price - like Knies + 1st + lesser prospect/3rd.

Looking at Giroux, Lindholm, Hall - these guys all went for a lot at the deadline and Kane is better than all of them. It's a lot to give up for 1 year of a player.

For the record, I'm not a fan of moving Sandin. He's one of the better defensemen we've drafted in a long time. For the record, we have a history that looks like this:

Niemela (2020), Kokkonen (2019), Sandin (2018), Durzi (2018), Kral (2018), Liljegren (2017), Dermott (2015), Rielly (2012), Schenn (2008). . .

I don't really think much of Kokkonen or Kral, but they are guys with at least a passing chance of being NHL players - but they are 21 and 22, so it sort of feels like you can pronounce them as not being difference makers in any capacity.

It's a hard sell to say, "you're going to get your chances because there are players who are bound to get injured." but you're not wrong that it's likely true.

Should trade Niemela while has value, MTL is the right destination since it will take him 7-8yrs to reach his potential and MTL will suck for that long. You get Norlinder and a turd in 2023.

Need whatever team that Holl gets traded to, to also sign Subban. Be the absolute worst right side ever.
