The hockey world, as far as contracting goes is finally changing for the better IMO.
I never bought into the old GM'g strategy of paying somebody into the future for what they accomplished in the past.
The longer term deals like Kadri just signed are generally ok for 3, maybe 4 years and then are massive boat anchors for the next 4 or 3 years. It is not a good model.
Now, with a pretty good Data Analytics organization, teams should be much more accurate at projecting future production to be able to identify those players they need to get out in front of to create Value Add contracts early on in a players career (relative to the past). In short, paying that player for current production rather than past in the lifecycles of a contract period.
Those teams who succeed in doing so will have a solid handle on Cap and Contract Management and wield it as advantage against those who don't/can't.
Maybe the Sens win with this specific deal, maybe not...but the concept is generally spot friggin on.
